READING, Pa. -- Freshman
Katie Schmerse notched her first career double-double leading the Albright volleyball team to a 25-23, 23-25, 25-20, 25-16 victory over Gwynedd Mercy in non-conference action on Friday in the Bollman Center.
Schmerse finished with 11 kills and 13 digs to help Albright snap an 11-match losing streak. The 11 kills marked a career high for the freshman from Lancaster, Pa., and the 13 digs was her second-highest total in an Albright uniform.
Schmerse had plenty of help on Friday night as
Maddy Greth finished with 15 kills and
Kellie Hill also had 11 kills. Led by the trio of Schmerse, Greth and Hill the Lions posted a .218 attack percentage for the match.
Sophomore setter
Claudia Guise had a season-high 42 assists and also finished with seven digs, five service aces and two kills.
Freshman
Becca Davis led the Albright defensive effort with 19 digs, while
Victoria Wainwright had a pair of blocks.
With the victory Albright raised its overall record to 4-14 on the season, while Gwynedd Mercy dropped to 8-16 overall.
Lauren Tressel had a team-high 10 kills for Gwynedd Mercy, while Brianna Greer, Laura Kirk and Jessica Behr each had six kills.
Just like in its last match against Goucher, Albright captured the first set to take a 1-0 lead.
Trailing 11-8, Albright responded with a 6-0 run behind a service ace from Guise and kills from Schmerse and Hill to take a 14-11 lead in the first set.
The Lions stretched the lead to 18-13 as Schmerse had a service ace and
Nicole Vazquez added a kill.
The Griffins rallied to tie the score at 19-19, but a kill by Greth put the Lions back in front to stay. Albright upped the lead to 24-20 and won the set on a kill by Guise.
Gwynedd Mercy rallied to win the second set to even the match at 1-1. The Griffins broke a 23-23 tie with a kill by Kirk and an Albright attack error to claim the set.
Albright used a 6-1 run midway through the third set on its way to a 25-20 win. Kills by Wainwright and Hill and a service ace by Greth sparked the run which put Albright in front to stay.
After Gwynedd Mercy had cut a 23-17 deficit to 24-20, Albright closed out the set on a kill by Hill.
Albright dominated the fourth set to clinch the victory. The Lions broke a 5-5 deadlock with a 5-0 run as Greth had a pair of kills and
Cheyenne Robinett also added a kill.
Greth served four consecutive points for Albright to increase the Lions lead to 16-7.
A kill by Schmerse upped the Lions lead to 20-9 and they closed out the set, and the match, on a rocket from Wainwright.
Albright will conclude its four-match homestand on Monday (Oct. 19) at 7 p.m. versus Penn State Abington in the Bollman Center.
