Greth, Guise Lead Lions Past Penn State Abington

READING, Pa. -- Sophomore Maddy Greth had eight kills and eight digs and Claudia Guise had 20 assists and four digs leading the Albright volleyball team to a 25-14, 25-15, 25-16 non-conference victory over Penn State Abington on Monday in the Bollman Center.

Albright extended its winning streak to two matches and improved to 5-14 overall on the season. Of the Lions five wins on the season, four have come via a sweep including Monday's win over the Nittany Lions.

Greth led Albright with eight kills, which marked the 18th time in 19 matches she has led the team. She also added two assists and a service ace to go along with eight digs.

Guise was masterful in directing the Albright offensive attack and also posted four service aces and two kills. The sophomore has recorded nine service aces in the last two matches.

Albright also received five kills each from Katie Schmerse and Victoria Wainwright and four kills from Nicole Vazquez and Kellie Hill. Vazquez also paced the Lions with a match-high five blocks.

Freshman Becca Davis once again anchored the Albright defense as she recorded 12 digs, which extended her double-figure dig match streak to 11 straight matches.

Penn State Abington, which dropped to 7-16 on the season, was led by Sam Amaro who had eight kills and 15 digs.

Albright pulled away early in the first set on its way to a 25-14 victory.

Leading 4-3, the Lions reeled off a 9-2 run to take a commanding 13-5 advantage. Four different Albright players notched kills during the run.

Kills by Schmerse and Hill pushed the Albright lead to 20-8 and the Lions closed out the first set on a service ace by Greth.

Deadlocked at 4-4 early in the second set, Albright took control with a 6-2 run aided by two Vazquez service aces.

After the Nittany Lions closed to within 12-8, Albright responded with a 8-5 run to push the lead to 20-13. A kill and a service ace by Guise sparked the Lions run.

Kills by Vazquez and Wainwright and a Penn State Abington attack error closed out the second set in favor of the Lions 25-15.

Albright dominated the third set and raced out to a 10-1 lead as Guise notched a pair of service aces and served the first five points of the set.

Penn State Abington climbed to within 21-15, but two Nittany Lion attack errors, a kill by Wainwright and a service ace by Davis clinched the set, and the match, for the Lions.

Albright returns to MAC Commonwealth play on Wednesday when it visits Lycoming for a 7 p.m. match.
