READING, Pa. -- Seniors
Amanda Smith and
Erin Farrell, the top two goal scorers in Albright history, showcased their talents on Tuesday as they each scored five goals as the Lions rallied to a 19-13 victory over Susquehanna on Tuesday at Shirk Stadium.
Smith has 156 goals to rank first in Albright history, while Farrell ranks second with 147 goals. Smith tallied three goals in the first period, while Farrell notched three goals in the second period.
Albright, which improved to 2-1 on the season, found itself trailing 5-1 at the 20:54 mark of the first period.
Following a Lion timeout, Smith scored on a free postion shot which jump started an 8-0 Albright run.
Danielle Carey brought Albright to within 5-3 at the 17:27 mark when she scored off of a feed from
Mariah Cullen.
Tori Meyer then capitalized on a free position shot to cut the lead to 5-4 with 15:50 to play in the opening period.
Cullen tied the game at 5-5 with an unassisted goal at the 14:47 mark and Smith put the Lions ahed to stay with a man-up goal at the 13:34 mark of the first.
Farrell scored her first goal of the game on an assist from Cullen that pushed the lead to 8-5, and Smith capped the run with an unassisted goal to increase the lead to 9-5 with 7:07 to play before halftime.
Goals by Farrell and
Sophie Bass helped the Lions take an 11-7 lead into the intermission.
Susquehanna, which dropped to 0-1 on the season, drew to within 11-9 when Caroline Rabiecki opened the second period with a goal.
Farrell answered with a goal for the Lions to increase the lead to 12-9, but Becky McHugh responded with a goal for the Crusaders to trim the lead to 12-10 with 21:19 to play.
Carey then ignited a 4-0 Albright run with an unassisted goal at the 18:08 mark of the second period. Farrell followed with a goal, Carey scored her fourth of the game and Smith finished the run with an unassisted goal to give the Lions a 16-10 advantage with 14:13 to play.
Susquehanna scored three consecutive goals to climb to within 16-13, but Bass, Smith and Farrell each scored goals in the final 5:58 to close out the game for the Lions.
Emily Hutson had a strong game in goal for the Lions as she turned aside 12 shots to pick up her second victory of the season.
Cullen was outstanding for the Lions as she had two goals, two assists and dominated the draw controls. Albright won the first 10 draw controls of the second period and Cullen finished with 10 draw controls.
Carey finished with four goals, Bass had two goals and Meyer had a goal and an assist for Albright.
Rabiecki led Susquehanna with four goals, while McHugh finished with three goals.
Albright returns to action on Saturday (March 5) when it faces Buffalo State at 4 p.m. in Utica, N.Y.
