GRANTHAM, Pa. -- Seniors
Amanda Smith and
Erin Farrell each scored two goals, but Messiah used a 7-0 run to defeat Albright 16-5 on Saturday at the Starry Athletic Complex.
Messiah, which improved to 5-4 overall and 1-0 in the MAC Commonwealth, held a 4-2 lead before closing the first half on a 4-0 run to increase the lead to 8-2 at the intermission. The Falcons opened the second period on a 3-0 run to up the lead to 11-2.
Smith and Farrell led Albright, which dropped to 5-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play, while
Mariah Cullen scored the Lions other goal on the afternoon.
Alexa Dipeso picked up the win in goal for Messiah as she made eight saves, while
Emily Hutson and
Hayley Joyce split time in goal for the Lions. Both Hutson and Joyce played 30 minutes and each permitted eight goals.
Allie Colson, Courtney Wagner and Kendra Herbenar each scored three goals to lead Messiah.
Wagner and Colson scored back-to-back goals to open the game giving the Falcons a 2-0 lead at the 28:30 mark of the first period.
Smith answered for Albright as she scored an unassisted goal at the 26:19 mark of the first to trim the lead to 2-1.
The Falcons received goals from Herbenar and Wagner to increase the lead to 4-1, but Farrell found the back of the net on a free-position goal at the 17:38 mark of the first which cut the lead to 4-2.
Messiah then answered with its 7-0 run, which spanned the end of the first period and the opening minutes of the secod period.
Cullen, Farrell and Smith all tallied second-half goals for Albright.
The Lions return to action on Wednesday (April 6) when it hosts Arcadia at 4 p.m. in Shirk Stadium.
