READING, Pa. -- Junior
Mariah Cullen scored five goals leading Albright to a 19-8 MAC Commonwealth victory over Arcadia on Wednesday at Shirk Stadium as the Lions recorded their first conference win of the season.
It marked the eighth game this season that Cullen has scored at least two goals, and fell one goal shy of tying her season high of six goals against Virginia Wesleyan.
Senior
Amanda Smith tallied four goals, while
Tori Meyer and
Erin Farrell each had three goals.
Sophie Bass added two goals, while
Casey Stocker and
Danielle Carey each had one goal.
Jacqui Montague had three assists to pace the Lions, while Bass, Cullen,
Corinne Donohue and Meyer added one assist.
Emily Hutson improved to 6-4 on the season in goal for Albright as she made six saves, and
Hayley Joyce played the final 5:31 in net and did not permit a goal.
Albright, which improved to 6-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play, outshot the Knights 31-22 and won the ground ball battle 18-15.
Arcadia, which dropped to 4-5 overall and 0-2 in the MAC Commonwealth, was led by Dawn Faranetta, Erin Misner and Jessica Santoli who each scored two goals.
Cullen got things started for the Lions as she scored an unassisted goal at the 27:55 mark of the first period giving Albright a 1-0 lead.
Bass followed with an unassisted goal and Albright held a 2-0 lead just 4:55 into the contest.
Arcadia used a pair of free-position goals to cut the Lions lead to 3-2, but Albright then reeled off an 8-2 run to close the first half to take control of the game.
Smith started the run with back-to-back goals to increase the lead to 5-2 and Meyer added back-to-back goals to up the margin to 7-2 with 11:30 left in the first.
After a goal by Bass increased the Albright lead to 9-2, the Knights responded with a pair of goals to trim the lead to 9-4.
Carey and Farrell closed the first period with goals for the Lions as Albright took an 11-4 lead into the intermission.
Albright opened the second period on a 6-0 run, which featured three goals from Cullen, to take a 17-4 lead with 22:03 to play in the game. Stocker closed the run with an unassisted goal, her first of the season, at the 22:03 mark.
Four straight goals by the Knights brought Arcadia to within 17-8, but Meyer and Farrell scored goals to close out the game.
Albright returns to action on Saturday (April 9) when it hosts Hood in a MAC Commonwealth game at 1 p.m. in Shirk Stadium.
