Chester, Pa.-The Albright women's volleyball team battled a tough opponent on the road but ultimately fell 3-0 to Widener University Wednesday night. With a loss to their MAC Commonwealth opponent, the Lions (2-6) fall to 0-2 in the conference.
Albright and Widener (6-7, 1-1) traded points often throughout the first set before Albright ran off five straight points to take a 17-12 lead thanks to three Widener attack errors and two aces from defensive specialist
Michaela Curran. Widener fought back to tie the score at 18 before scoring seven of the final 10 points to win set one 25-21.
The Lions kept the score close in the beginning of set two trailing 3-2 before Widener took control of the set. Widener ran off 18 straight points before Albright notched its third point of the set. The Lions eventually fell 25-6.
Widener raced out to an early 5-1 lead, but Albright answered back with a three point run of their own in the final set. Kills from middle hitter
Victoria Wainwright and outside hitter
Kellie Hill along with an ace from
Morgan Puller helped the Lions roar back. However, Widener continued to keep Albright at bay as the Lions were never closer than three points. The Lions final push came late in the set with a Widener attack error and a
Maddy Greth ace putting Albright down 21-18 before Widener ran off four straight points for the match win.
Senior outside hitter Greth led the Lions with six kills in the match, while junior setter
Claudia Guise finished with 15 assists. Defensively, Curran had a team-best six digs and Hill posted three blocks.
