COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Albright women's volleyball team opened its season at Ursinus on Friday night, and the Lions came out with a win in the first set. Ursinus, however, came back to take the next three sets and the match. Albright fell 25-22, 23-25, 11-25 and 19-25.
Trailing 13-12 in the first set,
Claudia Guise sparked a 5-0 Albright run with a pair of kills for the first two points of that streak.
Shaniyah Taylor capped the run with a kill that was assisted by Guise. Ursinus pulled to within 19-18, but
Paige Westra scored a point and Guise followed with an ace to make it 21-18.
Kellie Hill scored two of Albright's final three points, and
Katie Schmerse added one to help the Lions to a set victory.
Hill led the team with 12 kills. Guise had 31 assists and five kills. Schmerse had eight kills while Taylor had seven.
Becca Davis had 19 digs to lead the Albright defense.
Hill and Taylor had kills to pull the Lions to within 14-13 in game two, and three errors by Ursinus later in the set cut it to 20-19. The Bears responded with four of the next five points, however, to withstand a late run to win the second game, 25-23.
In game four, Schmerse had back-to-back kills to give the Lions a 14-10 lead. Ursinus scored six of the next seven points to retake the lead, and it scored eight of the last nine points in the set to take the match.
Albright opens the home portion of the schedule on Tuesday against Penn State Brandywine at 7 p.m.
