READING, Pa. – The Albright Lions women's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 straight-set defeat to Stevenson on Wednesday night at the Bollman Center in their MAC Commonwealth opener.
With the loss, the Lions drop to 2-3 on the season and 0-1 in MAC Commonwealth play. Meanwhile, the Mustangs improve to 6-0 and 1-0 in MAC Commonwealth play as they look to win their eighth-straight MAC Commonwealth title.
Freshman
Grace Andrefski led the Lions with three kills, while juniors
Kaitlyn Chell and
Brooke Franklin each tallied two kills. Chell led the Lions with 10 digs, while freshman
Shelby Cheuvront added eight digs. Junior
Alexa Poss paced the offense with nine assists and tallied a pair of aces.
Stevenson opened the game with the first two points before the Lions won the next three points to go up 3-2. However, the Mustangs would reel off 11-straight points to go up 13-3 behind seven kills. Stevenson would go on another run after the Lions broke up the run after a kill from Poss, this time an eight-straight point run to take a commanding 21-4 lead. The Lions would take the next two points before the Mustangs took the four of the next five points to take the first set at 25-7. Stevenson started red-hot in the second set as they won the first nine points behind three aces and three kills. The Lions would take the next four points behind a pair of aces from Poss to cut the Mustang lead down to 9-4, But Stevenson answered by taking 13 of the next 14 points to go up 22-5. Stevenson would then take three of the last five points to take the set 25-7 for the second-straight time.
The Lions started strong in the third set as they took a 3-1 lead behind kills from Franklin and sophomore
Grace Serafin. Albright would then take back the lead at 4-3 before leveling the score at 5-5 after a bad set from the Mustangs. However, that would be the last time the Lions held or was tied for the lead as Stevenson countered with four-straight points to go up 9-5. Albright would get within no less than five points the rest of the way as the Mustangs took the final set 25-15.
Albright will return to action on Tuesday, September 18
th as they will travel to face Arcadia in MAC Commonwealth play at 7 p.m.
