Volleyball Downed by Lebanon Valley in Straight-Sets

READING, Pa. – The Albright Lions women's volleyball team was defeated in straight-sets by Lebanon Valley (13-25, 20-25, 18-25) in MAC Commonwealth play at the Bollman Center on Tuesday night.
 
With the loss, the Lions drop to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in MAC Commonwealth play. Meanwhile, the Dutchmen improve to 3-5 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
 
Senior Brooke Franklin led the Lions with eight kills and posted a .375 hitting percentage. Franklin also added two blocks and two assists. Junior Grace Andrefski added five kills on seven attacks, a team-high .571 hitting percentage, and two blocks. First-year Sophie Hampton posted four kills and two digs, while senior Kaitlyn Chell registered a game-high 11 digs. First-year Paola Mejias paced the Lions offense with 19 assists in addition to adding four kills and five digs.
 
The Lions opened the match with back-to-back kills to go up 2-0 in the first set. Albright responded with two-straight points to go up 4-3 after the Dutchmen answered with three-straight points, but were unable to fend off five-straight points from Lebanon Valley. The run started a stretch of the Dutchmen winning 13 of the next 16 points to take a commanding 17-6 advantage. Albright would only be able to get as close as nine points as Lebanon Valley took set one 25-13.
 
The Dutchmen started strong in the second set as they jumped out to a 6-2 lead behind five errors from Albright. The Lions rallied with four-straight points to tie the match at seven, and responded to a pair of Dutchmen points to re-tie the second set at nine. The Lions pulled within one point at 13-12 following a kill from Franklin, but the Dutchmen reeled off five-straight points to go up 17-12. Albright continued to battle back as they got within two points on two separate occasions late in the second set, but were unable to sustain as the Dutchmen won 25-20.
 
Albright took a 3-2 lead early in the third set as they battled back and forth with the Dutchmen. Leading 6-5, the Lions fell behind the Dutchmen after they won six of the next seven points to go up 11-7. The Lions were able to pull within one point of Lebanon Valley at 15-14, but that was as close as they would get in the rest of the contest. The Dutchmen won six of the next seven points to go up 21-15 before closing out the set and the game at 25-18.
 
Mikiah Sangrey led the Dutchmen with 11 kills and a .625 hitting percentage, while Reilly Shelly matched Sangrey with 11 kills.  Ali Whitworth paced the Dutchmen offense with 29 assists and added five digs in the win.
 
The Lions will return to action on Thursday, September 16th as they will travel to face Penn State Schuylkill at 6 p.m.
