Reading, PA - After falling behind two sets to none, the Albright Lions Volleyball team came back to win the final three sets, and win the match over Penn State York. The Lions won 23-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-19, and 15-10. The win improves the Lions to 2-1 on the season.
The first set saw the two teams tied at six, when Penn State would go on a 6-0 run to take a lead, but then Albright answered with a 5-0 run of their own to pull within one. The teams would trade runs the rest of the set, with York getting the set 25-23.
The second set would also prove to be a game of runs, as each team grabbed the lead at times. York grabbed a 22-18 lead, but the Lions would score the next four points to tie things up. But York would win three of the last four points to take the set 25-23.
The third set was more of the same, as the two teams traded runs. York got out to an early 7-3 lead, but the Lions would answer with a 9-1 run to take a 12-8 lead. After York tied things up at 18, the Lions would then score the next four points to take a 22-18 lead. But then Penn State would score four consecutive points to tie it back up. Ultimately the Lions would score three of the last four points to take the third set
The difference in the fourth set was the serving by
Kyra Lycett for the Lions. Trailing 13-11, Lycett served, and didn't stop serving until the Lions were up 19-14, scoring eight straight points. The Lions would not look back, and would win the fourth set 25-19.
With things tied after four sets, the two teams headed to a final set. The set was tied at six when the Lions went on a 9-4 run to clinch the victory, with th efinal point being scored on a
Rhianna Betley kill.
The Lions got a huge game from
Sophie Hampton, as the sophomore outside hitter totaled 28 kills. Behind her was
Rhianna Betley with 13, and
Grace Andrefski who had 11. Andrefski's 11 kills came on 15 attempts, good for an outrageous .733 hitting percentage. The Lions had 60 kills as a team, and 46 of those came off of set assists from
Paola Mejias. Albright had nine service aces, with three from
Shelby Cheuvront, and two each from Mejias,
Kyra Lycett, and
Jenna Myers.
Defensively, the Lions had four players with double-digits digs, led by Cheovront's 26. Behind her was Lycett with 22,
Carly Bono with 18, and Mejias with 13. At the net,
Rachel Etim continued her excellent play of late, adding 4.5 blocks.
Up Next - The Lions will play their first conference game next, travelling to York to take on York College of Pennsylvania. That game will start at 7pm on Wednesday, Septemebr 7th.
