CHESTER, Pa. – The Albright Lions baseball team (10-18, 4-11 MAC Commonwealth) has won six of their last seven games by beating Widener (11-16, 7-8 MAC Commonwealth) in game two of today's double header. The win in game two gives the Lions their 10
th win of the season and back-to-back MAC Commonwealth series wins.
The 10
th win of the season surpasses the win total from all of the last season for Albright. It is the first time since 2019 that Albright has reached 10 wins in a season. Head coach
Justin Perry has spearheaded the impressive turnaround in only his second season in charge of the Albright baseball program.
Game 1: L, 5-4 (7 INN)
Albright was looking for their third straight come from behind win during game one of today's doubleheader. Widener led 5-3 heading into the top of the seventh inning. The Lions tallied a run in the inning to make it 5-4. The 5-4 result would hold as the Widener pitcher got the last out of the game with an Albright runner on third.
Chris Gorla continues to swing a hot bat for the Lions picking up three more hits today. Gorla went 3-3 at the plate with a double and two singles. Gorla has two three hits games this year with today being the second of the two. The first-year catcher has collected five hits in the first two games of the series raising his average to .308 on the year.
Tommy Lewman and
Nick Barton rounded out the hits in game one each reaching base on a single.
Christian Eckstein tallied a walk, a run scored and two stolen bases. Eckstein is up to nine stolen bases on the year and has only been caught stealing one time.
Zander Tesoriere,
Brenden Stuhltrager and
Roman Berretta all had one RBI for the Lions in game one.
Colby Yaich came on in relief for the Lions throwing two innings only allowing one run to score.
Game 2: W, 9-8 (9 INN)
Albright came out swinging in game two scoring six runs in the first two innings. The Lions pounded out 14 hits total in game two.
In the first inning,
Tommy Lewman,
Roman Berretta and
Chris Gorla all tallied RBI's. Lewman singled up the middle to score
Zander Tesoriere, Berretta doubled to score
Jack Gilmer and Gorla concluded the first inning with a two RBI double.
Lewman and Berretta came to the plate again in the second inning and both notched their second RBIs of the game. Lewman singled again to bring home
Owen Morais and Berretta brought home Tesoriere on a sacrifice fly.
Jack Gilmer went 4-5 at the plate with all four hits coming via the single. The four hit game is the first career four hit game for the Lions starting shortstop. Gilmer finished just one hit shy of tying the school record for hits in a game. Gilmer rounded out his impressive day at the plate by a adding a run scored.
Widener took an 8-6 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning but Albright had an answer in the top of the eighth inning. The Lions have been comeback kings as of late keeping the trend going by scoring three runs in the top of the eighth inning to take a 9-8 lead.
Brenden Stuhltrager doubled down the left field line that scored Gorla putting the Lions down by one at 7-8.
Lucas Myford notched the game winning hit for Albright scoring Stuhltrager and Barton on a single to give the Lions the lead for good at 9-8.
Patrick Ahearn was fantastic out of the bullpen for Albright. Ahearn came on in the bottom of the sixth inning and shut the door for the Lions. Ahearn picked up his third win of the season by throwing 3.1 innings with three strikeouts.
Lewman, Gorla and Berretta all finished game two with two RBIs for Albright. Lewman and Tesoriere both added two hits.
The Lions 1-3 batters in the game two lineup went a combined 8-15 with four runs scored.
