READING, Pa. - Led by senior quarterback #
Tanner Kelly#'s 266 yards of total offense, the 21st ranked Lions (8-0/5-0 MAC) continued their undefeated streak defeating the Devils of FDU-Florham (1-7/0-5 MAC) by the final score of 49-28 Saturday afternoon at Shirk Stadium.
On the day Kelly went 12-for-15 in the air for 204 yards, and on the ground the three times MAC Offensive Player of the Week rushed for an additional 62 yards and one touchdown. Kelly also threw for three TD's and surrendered his first interception of the season.
Playing a major part in the Lions' receiving game on Saturday was #
Andrew Castano# with three catches for 91 yards and one touchdown. Also recording touchdown reception in the Lions fifth straight conference win was #
Josan Holmes# and #
Tyrell Drumgo#. The two combined for 50 yards on five catches respectively. Holmes also posted 41 yards rushing and one rushing TD as well.
The Lions' special teams Kelly had another strong afternoon totaling 105 yards on three punts. He landed two behind the Devils 20-yard line and averaged 35 yards per kick. Junior kicker #
John Whelan# totaled seven kickoffs on Saturday for 382 yards (54.6 ypk).
Defensively, Albright had to make some last minute adjustments after FDU quarterback Bill Winters left the game in the opening minutes with a shoulder injury. Taking his place was Matt Jeffers who totaled 203 passing yards against the red and white. Even with the change in quarterbacks, the Lions were still able to record 51 tackles, five of which were for a loss, two interceptions, and one blocked punt.
Senior cornerback #
Brett Gaul# led the charge with the team's only blocked punt, one interception and four tackles. #
Brendan Bresnahan# continued his standout play against FDU recording a team high 6.5 tackles. #
Bob Harper# recorded 5.5 stops on Saturday and returned his only interception of the game six yards for a touchdown.
For the Devil's defense Steve Hoverson had a tremendous afternoon totaling 10 tackles, .5 sacks, and one tackle for a loss. Gilbert Taylor and Anthony DelConte each tallied 7.5 stops, while Taylor posted 1.5 sacks and one tackle for a loss.
Saturday's contest got off to a wild start as #
Jesse Henderson# returned Gaul's blocked punt for a touchdown to give Albright a six point lead in the first three minutes. Less than two minutes three minutes later, Kelly rushed the ball five yards to give Albright a 13-0 lead.
At around the halfway mark of the first quarter, Kelly connected with Castano on a 53 yard touchdown pass to put the red and white up 20-0. FDU did manage to end the scoring draught at 2:23 when Jeffers connected with Kyle Bukowiec for a 16 yard score.
In the second quarter, the Lions offense continued to power through the Devil's tough defense putting up 15 more points to take a 35-14 lead going into the halftime break. Finding the end zone in the second quarter was Drumgo and Holmes.
The only score in the third quarter was Harper's six yard interception return for a TD which made it 42-14.
Moving into the fourth quarter, the two teams traded touchdowns, through the midway point of the final quarter. Holmes gave his team their final touchdown of the night on a 11 yard reception from Kelly. After that FDU found the Lions end zone twice to give them their best quarter of the afternoon.
On the day, the Lions posted 423 yards of total offense on 57 plays. The Devil's finished Saturday's MAC showdown with 386 yards of offense on 65 places. Time of possession was almost identical, but it was Albright who held the slight advantage of 31 minutes of possession as compared to FDU's 29.
The Lions will return to action next Saturday when they face Delaware Valley College at 1 p.m. in Doylestown in one of the biggest match-ups of the entire season for both teams.
