READING, Pa. - After picking up their first week one victory since 2006 last week, the Lions accomplished another first, by starting off their season 2-0. Helping to achieve this mark was the 48-7 victory over Western Connecticut State University, Saturday evening at Shirk Stadium.
The last time the red and white carried a 2-0 record going into week three was in 2005, when they kicked off that season with a 4-0 mark.
Leading Albright to their first home victory of the new season was senior quarterbacks #
Tanner Kelly# and #
Patrick Subers#. The throwing duo combined for 466 of the Lions 605 yards of offense respectively. Kelly ended the night with 235 passing yard, 67 rushing yards, one touchdown reception, and one rushing touchdown. He was 14-for-21 and did not throw one interception.
Subers, totaled 98 yards in the air and another 66 on the ground. He also threw one touchdown pass, and completely changed the momentum of the game, when he rushed in for a two-point conversion late in the first half. Another Subers highlight was his 37 yard run up the Albright sideline, to set the Lions up for their second score of the night.
Kelly matched Subers heroic feet with a 93 yard touchdown pass to #
Scott Pillar# midway through the third quarter. The only other player to complete a longer pass than Kelly's was Mike Strack, who currently holds the program record with a 96 yard pass to Jesse Dorais in 2001 against Wesley College.
Not to be outdone by his offensive comrades, junior kicker #
John Whelan# put together another solid performance going 4-for-5 on point after attempts. He also had the opportunity to test his leg against the Colonials as the New Jersey native made two of his three field goal attempts. His longest of the night was measured at 43 yards which was a new career best.
Also having a sensational evening was the entire Albright defense, which held WCSU to just 168 yards of total offense. To date the Lions defense has allowed just 10 points in the first two games of the 2009 season. On the night, the red and white totaled two sacks and two interceptions.
Recording a game high eight tackles was junior defensive lineman #
Eddie Mitchem#. Behind him was #
Andrew Kibler# with a five tackles performance followed by #
Dave Harig# and #
Brendan Bresnahan# who each had 4.5 tackles.
For the second time this season, sophomore #
Alvin Thomas# led the Lions in the tackles for a loss category with three.
Switching over to the Colonials, it was a very tough 2009 debut for WCSU. Producing the team's lone touchdown of the night was Lionel Assie on a four yard run with 3:26 left in the first quarter. Assie left Shirk Stadium with 30 rushing yards on six carries.
Quarterback James Williams threw for 65 yards and was 6-for-13 with one interception. The Colonials other interception was charged to freshman quarterback Chris Sloat.
After a very close first quarter that saw the two squads deadlocked at seven each, Albright broke the game open in the second scoring a total of 18 points. They then continued the onslaught in the third with 16 more points, followed by a one score fourth quarter to earn the 48-7 decision.
The last time that the Lions recorded 48 points in a game was in 2006 when they defeated Juniata College by the score of 48-14 in week four of the season.
Football will take next Saturday off, and will return to action on the 26th when they travel to New York to face Pace University. The Lions final non-conference game of the season is scheduled to kick-off at noon.
