READING, Pa. - After a very long seven game skid, the Lady Lions (4-7) returned to their winning ways defeating both Alvernia University (0-12) and Gwynedd-Mercy College (2-11) Saturday afternoon in the Bollman Center in the final day of the 2009 Albright College Invitational.
The red and white defeated both of their opponents in three straight games to pick-up their third and fourth shutouts of the '09 season. After getting shutout for the first time this season by King's College yesterday evening, Albright returned to the Bollman Center looking to send a message. King's went onto win the 2009 Invite finishing the weekend with a 3-0 record.
In the opener, the Lions defeated Alvernia 25-13, 25-15, and 25-13. Against Gwynedd-Mercy Albright went 25-17, 25-13, and 25-18 to place second in their tournament. Gwynedd-Mercy finished third with a 1-2 record, and Alvernia finished fourth with an 0-3 record.
Against their Reading, Pa. rivals it was freshman #Alyssa Hoogendoorn# that guided the red and white to their first win. The River Vale, NJ native not only scored a team high six kills, but was also on the receiving end of one solo block and three block assists.
Senior #Christina Yatron# and sophomore #Laura van Bendegem# combined for 10 kills respectively, and #Lauren Higgins# and #Erin Wentzel# each scored three service aces. Defensively #Casey McFadden# and #Jill Bonitatibus# tallied six digs each. The duo also had a pair of aces as well.
In the finale, the Lady Lions just powered through the Griffins, and made them pay for their slew of errors.
#Danielle Ozment# made an immediate impact and was dominant throughout the three games match scoring a match high nine kills. She also managed a team best 13 digs and four service aces. #Alexa Jones# tied her teammate in the kill's category scoring a nine of her own. Higgins was sensational at setter tallying 31 assists for the second consecutive day.
Volleyball returns to action on Tuesday when they travel to Williamsport, Pa. to take on Lycoming College in a 7 p.m. Commonwealth Conference match. Last season, the Lady Lions defeated the Warriors in a five game comeback on their Rally for a Cure night.
