PLEASANTVILLE, NY - It was a wild afternoon in New York as the Lions (3-0) faced off against Division II Pace University (0-4) Saturday afternoon at Pace Field. Despite trailing for most of the contest, the Lions managed to battle back in the fourth quarter to defeat the Setters by the final score of 26-20.
Even with three straight scores by Pace in the second and third quarters, Albright managed to retaliate late in the third with two touchdowns of their own, and another in the fourth to make that final push past the winless Setters.
Driving the red and white to victory was senior quarterback #
Tanner Kelly# who rushed four the two final touchdowns to give his team the late win. On the ground Kelly totaled 48 yards on 12 tries.
Sophomore #
Josan Holmes# led the Lions offense on Saturday with 89 total yards and one touchdown. Holmes carried the ball a total of 21 times and averaged just over four yards a carry.
Back to Kelly, the Clearfield, Pa. native was nearly perfect for the third consecutive game going 15-for-18. He was held to a season low 79 yards, but did not throw an interception all game. Two of Kelly's main receivers against the Setters was tight end #
Andrew Hettinger# and wide receiver #
Luke Wallace#. The two combined for 60 yards on seven catches respectively.
Kicker #
John Whelan# continued his outstanding play nailing a 35 yard field goal in the first quarter to give the Lions the 3-0 lead. He also recorded 266 yards on five kickoffs and averaged over 53 yards a kick. Of the three Albright touchdowns that were scored only one saw a Whelan extra point.
The final two Albright scores saw #
Bob Harper# and #
Nate Romig# convert on the two point conversions. With two more points to his name Romig now sits just eight points away from tying the all-time scoring record at Albright by a non-kicker.
Defensively, the Lions had a hard time containing Pace's Division I transfer Nathaniel Ford. The former University of Connecticut Huskie totaled 161 receiving yards on 19 catches with one touchdown, and had 41 yards rushing on three carries.
However, the Albright defense did shine when they needed to shutting the Setters offense down for the entire first and fourth quarters. Their efforts were showcased by a variety of players including senior #
Andrew Kibler# who had a team high six tackles. #
Brendan Bresnahan# tallied 5.5 tackles of his own.
When not earning two more points for his team, Harper was helping to lead a defense that totaled 46 tackles on the day. The senior recorded five tackles and one interception. #
Brett Gaul# took credit for the Lions second interception on the day.
Sophomore #
Alvin Thomas# continued his destructive play recording 1.5 sacks to bring his season total of 5.5, which leads the Lions. He also has a team 7.5 tackles for a loss following Saturday's huge win.
Proving to be the most crucial drive of the day for Albright was when they clawed out 91 yards on 14 plays to retake the lead 24-20 with about 10 minutes to play in the fourth quarter. After the Romig two point conversion, the momentum completely shifted to the Lions. Albright's defense also came through stopping the final Pace drive at the Albright 27.
With less than five minutes to play, Albright continued to move the ball up the field. They kept the plays simple, which prevented any real chance of turnovers. The Lions drive came to an end at their own 47 yard line when they ran out the clock.
