Three Goal Second Half Pushes Lions Past Valley Forge

Box Score

READING, Pa. – After dropping two tough conference matches earlier in the week, men's soccer (9-5) looked to unload some of their frustration on their final non-conference opponent of the 2010 season. With four different players finding the back of the goal the red and white cruised to a 4-0 win over Valley Forge Christian College (3-10) Thursday evening in Shirk Stadium.

Wednesday's match got off to a very sluggish start for the red and white. It was not until the second half that the Lions offense began to fire on all cylinders. Proving to be the spark for the Lions second half surge was junior defender #Chris Tadley#. In the 64th minute the New Jersey native dribbled the ball out of Lions defensive third and found an unmarked #Tyler Waters# on the outside of the Patriots goal box.

Waters then crossed the ball into the box, just as Tadley was making a run to the far post. Right as Tadley turned to face the goal he redirected the ball off the far post and in to give Albright a two goal lead.

Scoring the first goal of the match for Albright was #Adam Toroniewksi# in the 8th minute on an unassisted play. Despite the early score, the Lions struggled to possess the ball throughout the first 45 minutes of play.

However, the red and white regrouped during the halftime break and after the intermission came out firing. In the first five minutes of the second half, the Lions offense got off five shots.

Giving Albright a 3-0 lead was #David Folino# who scored on a perfectly placed corner kick from #Shawn Murphy#. The Lions final goal of the night belonged to freshman #Neil Rapp#. The first-year player received a pass from classmate #Fran Schmutz# inside the Patriots goal box. Rapp then took a quick touch and blasted the ball past the goalkeeper. The goal and assist were both career firsts for Schmutz and Rapp.

Stepping in goal against Valley Forge was junior newcomer #Phil Jones#. The Philadelphia native came up with five saves in only his second start as a member of the team. Valley Forge's Mark Bowman totaled 10 saves in the match, and played a major part in keeping the game at 1-0 through the first 45 minutes.

On the night the Lions tallied 27 shots and led the match in corner kicks with seven. Defensively the red and white held Valley Forge to just seven shots and two corner kicks.

Men's Soccer returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Annville to face Lebanon Valley College at 3 p.m. in a Commonwealth Conference match.
