GLENSIDE, Pa. – Despite trailing by three runs for most of the afternoon, the Lions (5-8/2-1 CC) put up six unanswered runs in the top of the ninth inning to earn a 9-6 come from behind conference win over Arcadia University (2-11/1-2 CC) Tuesday afternoon at Envy Field.
Helping the Lions to the conference win was their ability to take advantage of two key errors by the Knights, and two walks. Combined with a two run double by Tommy Canuso and a one run single by
Mike Nolan, the Lions clawed past the Knights to take the rubber-match.
Canuso's clutch double in the ninth was just one of the sophomore's three hits Tuesday afternoon. On the day the Aston, Pa. native went 3-for-5 with two RBI's and two runs scored. Nolan's single in the ninth was his lone hit of the day, but gave his team some much needed breathing room.
After the huge offensive inning by the Lions, freshman
Tyler Meckley stepped on the mound to close the game out for Albright. Looking like a veteran pitcher Meckley retiredthree of the four batters he faced in the bottom half of the ninth to pick up his first collegiate win. Overall, Meckley went two complete innings and struck out three Knights.
Getting the start Tuesday afternoon was sophomore righty
Matt Rehrig who went seven complete innings before handing the ball over to Meckley. In his longest appearance of the season, the Mohrsville native allowed six runs on 10 hits, while fanning four batters, and walking only one.
Combined the Lions posted nine hits in the win, while defensively they were only charged with one error as compared to Arcadia's five. The Knights did lead the afternoon in the hits column with 10, but solid defensive play and pitching kept them off the scoreboard for most of the afternoon.
Arcadia would record all six of their runs in the first three innings of play Tuesday afternoon. Albright did not get on the scoreboard until the top of the fourth when they put up three runs of their own to make it 6-3.
After 4 ½ scoreless innings, Albright jumped all over Arcadia and powered past the Knights to take the win with their first six run inning of the season.
Baseball returns to action this Friday when they host Lebanon Valley College at 3:30 p.m. on Kelchner Field.
