ANNVILLE, Pa. - Looking to bounce back from Friday's loss to Lebanon Valley, the Lions faced off against the Dutchmen (13-4/3-0 CC) in game two and three of the three game set. Unfortunately the red and white could not pull out the much needed conference win as the Dutchmen went on to sweep Albright (5-11/2-4 CC by the final scores of 5-4 and 7-2 Saturday afternoon at McGill Field.
In game one, Albright battled back from first from a 3-0 deficit in the third and 4-3 deficit in the fifth to tie the score at 4-4 going into the seventh inning. It was in the seventh frame, that the Dutchmen got two quick outs, before junior shortstop Patrick Brady stepped up to the plate.
Brady made contact and got on base on his second hit of the afternoon, to give Albright the possible go ahead run. After stealing second, the Lions were in a position to take their first lead of the day. However, Dutchmen pitcher Nate Blough was unfazed by the late hit and stolen base, as he retired the next Albright batter to end the inning.
Lebanon Valley would then take advantage of two errors in the bottom half of the seventh to score the game winning run. Getting the loss in the opener was
Kevin Butler who came in relief in the seventh. Sophomore lefty
Tyler Storms started the contest and went six complete innings. During his outing on the mound, Storms surrendered the four runs on six hits, and walked three batters, and struck out four.
Joining Brady in the multiple hits category in game one was Tommy Canuso who went 2-for-3 with one run scored, and
Jojo Fischer who also went 2-for-3 on the day with one RBI.
Brady along with
Mike Nolan and
Doug Mace each recorded one double in the opener as well.
The nightcap was another hard hitting contest between the two conference rivals. Albright ended game two with a combined six hits, while Lebanon Valley tallied 10 hits of their own.
Shane Stein led the way for the red and white going 2-for-3 in game two, with Brady, Canuso, Fischer, and Nolan each recording one hit each. For Canuso his recent hitting streak has been extended to six consecutive games with at least one hit or more.
The Dutchmen's Ryan Schwartz proved to be one of the deciding factors for his team going 2-for-3 on the afternoon, with one RBI, and three runs scored.
On the hill,
Matt Rehrig was handed the loss after his 5 2/3 inning appearance in which he allowed all seven runs on nine hits. Jake Becker recorded the game two victory in his three complete innings of action.
Baseball returns to action on Monday when they travel to Delaware Valley College for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference game.
