READING, Pa. - After falling in game one of their conference doubleheader, freshman pitcher Kevin O'Neill stepped on the mound and through the first four innings of the nightcap, the righty freshman was impressive retiring 12 of the 14 batters he faced. Unfortunately one bad inning would prove to be the deciding factor as Elizabethtown College (16-8/9-3 CC) went on to sweep the host Lions (5-19/2-10 CC) by the final scores of 16-7 and 4-0 Saturday afternoon at Kelchner Field.

By far, O'Neill's performance Saturday afternoon was the best of his young career, as he retired Blue Jay after Blue Jay. After a tough fifth inning for O'Neill, freshman Tyler Meckley stepped on the mound and pitched a gem of his own. Through 1 2/3 innings, Meckley did not surrender a hit, a run, or walk.

Prior to the standout performances by the newest members of the Lions bullpen, Albright had their hands full in game one of the doubleheader. Needing both victories to keep their postseason dreams alive, Albright took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.

However that lone run was not enough, as Elizabethtown jumped all over the Lions scoring six unanswered runs through the next two frames. After giving up two more runs in the fourth, the Albright bats came alive and scored four runs of their own to make it three-run ball game (8-5).

The Lions then made it an even closer game after scoring another run in the fifth. With the momentum slowing starting to shift in the direction of the Lions, Albright knew they had to keep the Blue Jays off the scoreboard in the sixth. Unfortunately that was not the case, as Elizabethtown scored a total of eight runs on eight hits to jump out to a 16-6 lead.

Albright's final run of the opener came in the bottom half of the seventh on a Mike Nolan sacrifice fly. Sophomore left fielder Jon Raymond continued to make contact at the plate going 2-for-4 in game one with two RBI and a run scored. Nolan along with Casey Lawrence both went 2-for-3 in the opener, and it was Lawrence who scored Albright's first run of the day, after crushing a triple to right field.

On the hill, Matt Rehrig was handed his fifth loss of the season after surrendering six runs on nine hits. For Elizabethtown, the win went to Ryan Barrett after his 2 2/3 innings of work.

The nightcap moved right along as O'Neill went head-to-head with Etown senior Matt Vinagro. Each pitcher allowed just five hits in game two, but it was Vinagro's five strikeouts and solid defensive play behind him that proved to be the difference maker.

Senior catcher Matt Kozlowski recorded two of Albright's five hits. Anthony Heaps, who went 3-for-4 with two RBI and three run scored in the opener, continued to his dominance at the plate going 2-for-2 with a run scored to help the Blue Jays earn the sweep.

Baseball returns to action on Tuesday when they host Misericordia University at 3:30 p.m. in a non-conference game.
