Lawrence Leads Lions Baseball Past Drew

Box Score

READING, Pa. - With a dominant seven innings by senior righty Casey Lawrence, the Lions (8-22) were able to pull out a 7-1 non-conference win over the visiting Rangers of Drew University (7-25) Tuesday afternoon on Kelchner Field.

On the day, the McSherrystown native did not give up a single run, and surrendered just three hits. He also walked just one batter and fanned a total of eight. Through the first three innings, Lawrence was nearly perfect giving up his lone walk in the second. Prior to a Drew single in the fourth, Lawrence retired nine of the 10 batters he faced. With the win, Lawrence improved to 3-3 on the year and is now sitting with a 60 strikeouts on the season.

Despite giving up the single in the fourth, the Lions defense came through for their starter getting the runner out at home on what would have been a sacrifice fly. Making the huge play was Shane Stein who gunned the ball past the cut-off man right into the glove of catcher Jojo Fischer.

After that inning, Lawrence would retire his next six batters in order, before giving up his final two hits of the day in the seventh. Closing out the game for Albright was Kevin Butler who in the final two innings gave-up just two hits and Drew's only run, which was unearned.

At the plate, Albright put up two early runs in the bottom half of the first inning. Junior shortstop Patrick Brady led off the inning with a single to left field. He then advanced to second after Stein walked. The speedy duo then stole second and third respectively.

Justin Danser loaded the bases after getting walked on four straight pitches. Picking up the first RBI of the afternoon was Tommy Canuso on a fielder's choice which scored Brady. Fischer drove in Albright's second run of the afternoon on a groundout to the third baseman.

Following the go ahead inning, the Lions would continue to make contact throughout the middle frames. However it was not until the sixth inning that the red and white broke the game wide open, scoring four unanswered runs.

Danser would drive in two of Albright's four runs in the sixth on a two RBI single to center field. Canuso picked up his second RBI of the afternoon in the inning, while Stein recorded his first.

Albright's final run of the afternoon came in the eighth on a Kyle McGee RBI single to center, which scored Danser, who was sitting on second base after his double to right.

A total of four Lions recorded two or more hits in Tuesday's win, with Danser leading the way with a 3-for-4 showing at the plate. Canuso, Brady, and Rob Mancinelli each recorded a pair of hits.

Baseball returns to Kelchner Field on Thursday for game two of their four-game home stand as they host Misericordia University at 3:30 p.m.
