COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Looking to bounce back after yesterday's tough loss to Susquehanna, the Lions (9-24), led by solid pitching and five-run fifth inning, defeated the host Bears of Ursinus College (16-19-1) by the final score of 6-2 Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference contest.
On the day Albright recorded 10 hits, while holding the Bears to only seven. Senior pitcher
Shane Stein was solid through his five innings of work, allowing just two hits and no runs. Also having solid outings for the red and white was
Tyler Storms,
Kevin Thomas, and
Kevin Butler.
Storms made his return to the mound after nearly a month on the disabled list. In his only inning of work the sophomore lefty fanned two of the four batters he faced.
Albright wasted little time getting on the scoreboard scoring the first run of the afternoon in the top of the third inning. From there, the Lions seized control of the contest in the fifth.
Casey Lawrence drove in the first run of the inning on an RBI single to left field. Lawrence would then move over to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Matt Pannella. The Lions then loaded the bases on back-to-back singles by #Tommy Canuso
and Justin Danser#.
After a wild-pitch that scored Lawrence, sophomore
Jon Raymond cleared the bases on a two RBI double to left field. Raymond would then move over to third on another wild pitch, and then score on a sacrifice fly by
Shawn Walbert.
The Lions would maintain their shutout until the bottom half of the ninth inning, when the Bears put up their only two-runs of the day.
Stein was credited with win, his first of the season, while Ursinus' Ryan Furlong was handed the loss allowing five runs on five hits in 4 1/3 innings of work.
Baseball returns to action on Friday when they host Widener University at 3:30 p.m. on Kelchner Field. Prior to the start of Friday's contest, the Lions will recognize their six senior members.
