LAKELAND, Florida – Two late inning rallies would prove to be the deciding factor as the Green Terror of McDaniel College (2-2) dropped the Lions (1-4) in a non-conference doubleheader by the final scores of 8-5 and 5-3 Saturday afternoon at Lake Boney Park.
After the game one loss, the Lions rallied in the nightcap and nearly pulled out the victory, but were unable to hang on as the Green Terror put up three runs in the top of the third to take a 5-3 lead. They then held on in the bottom half of the inning to earn the sweep.
For Albright, senior
Justin Danser had himself a-day as he went 6-for-7 with two RBI and two runs scored. In the opener he drove in the Lions third and final run on a double to right center. He then recorded his first triple of the year in the nightcap to spark a bottom of the sixth inning rally. Danser would make his way home to give the Lions at the team a 3-2 lead.
Unfortunately, even with bases loaded and no outs on the scoreboard, the Lions were unable to drive any additional insurance runs. This would keep McDaniel in the game, as the heart of their order came up in the top half of the seventh.
Clutch hits by the Green Terror in the seventh would drive in three runs to make it 5-3, before the Lions
were able to get out of the top half of the frame. In the bottom of the seventh, Albright got two on base, but were unable to advance past second as McDaniel's Andrew Monger held on to earn his first win of the year.
Pitching a gem for the Lions in game two was
Paul Labe, III, who showed tremendous control throughout the nightcap. Through six innings of work, Labe surrendered just four hits, but it was two homers by McDaniel that kept the Green Terror in the game.
In the opener, McDaniel came out swinging scoring five unanswered runs through the first two innings. Albright did manage to claw their way back in the fourth as they scored two runs to make it just a three-run game. Unfortunately a three-run bottom of the sixth secured the Green Terror's first win of the year.
Combined the Lions totaled 18 hits in Saturday's doubleheader, while McDaniel combined for 24 hits as team.
Baseball returns to action tomorrow when they take on Dickinson College at 9:30 a.m. in a non-conference doubleheader.
