AUBURNDALE, Florida – Sometimes it only takes one to get a season back on track. After suffering another disappointing loss, the Lions came together and used solid hitting and a terrific showing from sophomore pitcher
Tyler Meckley to end their five-game losing streak as they split (L 12-4, W 9-4) with Clarkson University (3-4) Tuesday afternoon.
The Lions nearly pulled out the sweep, but with a Clarkson six-run top of the seventh they were unable to keep their New York opponents close. However, in the second game, the red and white took control of the scoreboard early and added at least one run between the third and sixth innings.
After jumping out to a 2-1 lead in the third inning, the Lions scored three runs in the fourth, one in the fifth, and three more in the sixth to earn their largest lead of their spring trip. Clarkson would manage just one run in the bottom of the fourth and two in the bottom of the seventh before getting handed their fourth loss of the year.
Meckley, who is now 2-0 on the year, went 5 2/3 innings and allowed just two runs on six hits. He also fanned two batters and walked just one other. Junior
Matt Rehrig came in relief in the bottom of the sixth to end a possible bases loaded threat by the Clarkson to keep the score at 9-2. In the seventh Rehrig surrendered two runs on two hits before closing out the victory for his team.
At the plate, a variety of players came through with clutch hits. One of those players was freshman
Collin Hecker who went 2-for-3, with a huge double, and two run scored.
Jojo Fischer also made an impact at the plate as he went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI.
Combined Albright recorded nine hits in the victory after posting eight in the game one loss to the Golden Knights. Clarkson's offense combined for 22 hits on the day as a team.
In the opener Clarkson put up four runs through the first three innings, while Albright managed one of their own. The Lions then tacked up one more run to make it a two-run ball game. Both teams would score a deuce in the sixth, but it was a six-run top seven that secured Clarkson's victory.
Tom Canuso produced at the plate for the red and white as he went 2-for-3 with a run scored. On the hill a trio of pitchers surrendered 13 hits, with only five of the 12 runs scored marked as earned.
Baseball will close out their spring trip tomorrow when they take on Ramapo College at 1 p.m.
