Box Score
READING, Pa. – It has been a long time since junior lefty
Tyler Storms has gone more than one inning, but in this case the rest was well worth it as he pitched a gem in the final 4 2/3 innings to secure the Lions (4-12) an 8-7 non-conference win over Delaware Valley College (3-8) Wednesday afternoon at Kelchner Field.
Driving in what would become the game winning run was senior shortstop
Pat Brady, who took the second pitch of his final at-bat and drove it to deep right-center. The quick infielder made his way around first, just as teammate
Doug Mace was beginning to get third base.
Head coach
Jeff Feiler, sent Mace on what was the deciding play of the afternoon. The Aggies outfielder got the ball in to the cut-off man, but by the time they got the ball to the catcher, Mace was touching home plate to put the Lions up 8-7.
Brady would then advance to third on a wild pitch, but that would be as far as he would go as Delaware Valley's Cody Hudnall got out of the inning with his team down by one run. Going into the top of the ninth, Storms had only surrendered one hit and had just one strikeout to his name in the contest.
However Storms (1-0) wasted little time adding two more strikeouts to his line as he retired the Aggies top two hitters in order. The final out would be the result of a groundout to Brady on an unnecessary 3-2 count.
At the plate the Lions continued to produce tallying nine hits, with all eight runs marked as earned. Senior outfielder
Matt Pannella was red-hot throughout the very cold afternoon going 3-for-4 with an RBI, and a run scored. Brady was just as solid as he recorded a pair of doubles with the game winning RBI and a run scored.
Outfielder
Jon Raymond and second baseman
Nate Peiffer were also members of the doubles club on Wednesday. Raymond drove home two runs on his lone hit of the afternoon, while Peiffer counted for two the Lions eight runs scored.
Getting the start on Wednesday was
Brian Kurtz, who went four complete innings. Of the six runs scored while Kurtz was on the hill only two were earned. Kurtz also managed a season-high five strikeouts and gave-up eight hits.
Hudnall (0-2) was handed the loss after giving up the game-winning run. Through three innings Hudnall allowed just two hits. He along with Brian Hafer and Jordan Heisler combined for six strikeouts and only three walks.
Dan Hrubos was the hot bat for the Aggies going 3-for-5 on the afternoon. Jim Calabrese and Mike Otstot each recorded a pair of hits, but it was Calabrese who drove in two of the Aggies seven runs. Kellen Jarrett also recorded two RBI on his 1-for-3 afternoon.
Baseball returns to action on Friday when they travel to Widener University for a 3:30 p.m. Commonwealth Conference game, weather permitting.
