READING, Pa. – Using two seventh inning rallies, the Dutchmen of Lebanon Valley College (11-17/4-8 Commonwealth) were able to sweep baseball (7-18/3-9 Commonwealth) by the final scores of 7-4 and 13-2 Saturday afternoon at Kelchner Field.
In the opener, the Dutchmen's seventh inning rally was the result of three key errors, which allowed the opposition to score five runs, all of which were unearned. Game two saw eight runs put on the scoreboard in the seventh as the Lebanon Valley's bats caught fire and blew Saturday's game wide open.
On the day, Albright combined for 16 hits in the conference doubleheader, while their rivals from Annville tallied a combined 22 hits. Senior
Jojo Fischer went 2-for-3 in game with two doubles and a run scored.
Nate Peiffer continued to crush the ball as he went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. His second hit of the day was a one-run blast over the centerfield wall to make it at the time a three-run ball game (3-0).
Lebanon Valley would put-up their first run of the day in the fourth to make 3-1. They then made it 3-2 on an RBI double by Colt Zarilla in the top of the sixth. Albright pushed their lead back to two when
Jon Raymond plated Fischer on a sacrifice fly to center.
Going into the seventh junior pitcher
Paul Labe, III had a solid afternoon on the hill. However with the defensive breakdown in the seventh, Labe exited the game having surrendered seven runs, two of which were earned, on 10 hits with one walk and one strikeout.
Kevin Thomas picked-up the final out of the inning, but the damage had been done. Nate Blough made quick work of the Lions in the bottom half of the seventh to cap off his has afternoon and to earn his third win of the year.
The nightcap was just as close as the first. Both teams would exchange runs through the first three innings. Knotted at 2-2 going into the fifth, Lebanon Valley recorded the go-ahead run on a RBI single. They then added some more distance to their lead with a two-run top of the sixth. All eight of the Dutchmen's runs in the seventh were earned and secured their second win of the afternoon.
Pat Brady was the only player to record two hits in the nightcap. Driving in the first run of the day was
Justin Danser, while the second run belonged to Raymond in the form of a one-run bomb over the left field wall.
Tyler Meckley was handed the loss after going five complete innings in which allowed three runs on four hits.
Baseball returns to Kelchner Field tomorrow when they host Moravian College at 4 p.m.
