READING, Pa. – Despite going hit-for-hit with the defending conference tournament champions, the Lions (4-14/0-5 Commonwealth) could not catch a break as the Pride of Widener University (18-6/6-2 Commonwealth) swept the red and white by the scores of 7-2 and 4-3 Saturday afternoon at Kelchner Field in a conference doubleheader.
Both teams closed out Saturday's doubleheader with 14 hits each. Albright actually recorded more hits (10-7) than the Pride in the opener, but a 3-run top of the seventh secured the win for Widener in the series opener.
In the nightcap, the Lions tacked on four more hits, while Widener put up seven of their own. This time it was a 3-run top of the second and a run in the top of the fifth that gave the Pride the conference win. Albright also put up a run in the second, and with two more in the fourth tied the game at 3-3.
The game-winning run was scored as a result of an RBI single to left field by Dan Sieracki. Sieracki went 2-for-3 in the nightcap was also one of the 3-runs scored in the second.
Jon Raymond and
Pat Brady each went 2-for-3 in the opener, with Raymond also recording an RBI.
Tom Canuso recorded the Lions only other RBI in game one as he went 1-for-4. On the mound
Matt Rehrig was handed his third loss of the year after giving-up six runs (4 earned) on six hits. He also walked five batters and struck out two.
Game two saw
Collin Hecker go 0-for-3, but still managed two RBI.
Nate Peiffer also drove in a run as he went 1-for-4. Canuso picked-up his second hit of the day against the Pride's Kevin Culbert. Jojo Fisher was 1-for-2 with two runs scored, and
Rob Mancinelli was 1-for-4 with a run scored as well.
Paul Labe, III pitched a solid seven innings despite getting the loss. In his seven innings of work, Labe allowed the four runs (3 earned) on seven hits and struck out two batters. He also managed to get nine batters to fly out and another eight to groundout.
Culbert picked-up the win, his fifth of the year, with the 4-3 victory. Salvatore Spera earned the team's first save of the year after closing out the seventh, in which he walked one and retired two.
Baseball returns to action tomorrow when they travel to Widener for a 12 p.m. conference game.
