READING, Pa – Led by a tremendous performance by Leon Stimpson and 23 hits combined, the Crusaders of Alvernia University (31-5, 17-1 Commonwealth Conference) downed baseball (9-25, 3-15) by the scores of 13-3 and 5-1 in the final conferences games for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Angelica Park.
Stimpson produced four runs scored, six hits and three RBIS to pace the Crusaders in Saturday's matchup.
In game one, the Lions jumped to an early advantage in the top of the first.
Nate Peiffer led off the game with a single and advanced to third on an error and passed ball.
Justin Danser then drove home Peiffer with a single of his own.
The Crusaders responded, however, and took control early as they put up nine runs in the first two innings. The biggest hit was provided by Tim Ahlquist, who struck a triple to right field in the first inning that brought home Alvernia's fifth run.
Alvernia held the 9-1 lead until the bottom of the fifth when they would add to the advantage. Julian Faria doubled to left field to bring in one run, and Stimpson cracked a two-run home run to make it a 12-1 ballgame.
The Lions scored two more in their next at-bat, as
Pat Brady drove in one with and single and Peiffer drew a bases-loaded walks to cut the lead to nine. Alvernia added one more in the sixth before Matthew Burger struck out the side in the seventh as the Crusaders took the game one victory.
Andrew Kirk earned the win for the Crusaders in game one, while Paul Labe was handed the loss.
The Lions kept things close in the second game. Down 1-0 in the top of the fourth,
Matt Pannella drove in Brady to tie things up. However, the Crusaders would pull away in the fifth and sixth with four runs combined to complete the series sweep.
In his first appearance as a starter this season,
Tyler Storms didn't disappoint on the mound. Even though he was credited with the loss, he kept Albright in the game early. He threw five innings and allowed six hits and two earned runs. Storms also struck out six.
Mike Weinhold earned the win for Alvernia in game two as he allowed just two hits and one earned run in six innings of work.
Brady was Albright's most effective hitter as he went 3-for-6 with one run scored and one RBI.
Saturday's doubleheader marked the final game for Brady and his nine senior classmates. The group finishes their careers with two Commonwealth Conference playoff appearances, which occurred in the 2008 and 2009 seasons.
