In an entertaining offensive contest that saw a combined 39 shots between the Albright College women's soccer team and host DeSales, the two sides walked away with a 3-3 tie on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action in Center Valley, PA.
Down 3-2 in the game's final moments, the visiting Lions made one final push with six seconds to play. Off of a free kick, a shot by the Lions was blocked by the hand of a Bulldogs defender and the visitors were awarded a penalty kick with no time left on the clock. Defender
Mel Sullivan deposited the kick to bring the game into overtime.
Although DeSales would threaten in the second overtime period with four shots on goal, neither team found the back of the net in extra time.
The last-second goal for the Lions was needed after DeSales'
Brady Walsh scored with just over five minutes to go to give the home team a 3-2 advantage. Walsh's goal was her team-leading sixth on the season and came off an assist from
Lydia Younger.
DeSales created an early lead five minutes into the contest when an Albright misplay resulted in an own goal. The host Bulldogs would carry the 1-0 lead into halftime and expand on it at the 50:39 mark when
Alyssa Brandt scored with another assist courtesy of Younger.
The Lions cut into the deficit a little over five minutes later as
Katie Cooper struck for her sixth goal in the season's first six games on a pass from
Jordan Cassidy. After continuing to put on pressure, Albright would even things up at 2-2 after senior
Lauren O'Brien registered her first goal of the season.
Both Walsh and
Erin Hand would record six shots apiece to lead their respective teams.
DeSales held a 23-16 advantage in shots, while the Lions had 12 corners compared to seven for the home side.
Olivia Giuliano recorded eight saves on the day for Albright, and
Melissa Millili made five saves for DeSales.
Albright moves to 3-1-2 on the season and will be back in action on Thursday at 4 p.m. when the Lions host the College of Saint Elizabeth.
