Box Score
A pair of stunning early goals and a penalty kick save helped the Albright College women's soccer team to its first Commonwealth victory of the season, 4-1 over Lycoming on Tuesday in Shirk Stadium.
Senior
Jordan Cassidy had two goals and an assist, while strike partner
Erin Hand had a goal and an assist.
Albright's two highlight-reel goals came in a span of just 4:20. Hand was 20 yards out in the ninth minute when she hit an outstanding half-volley that bent right over the keeper to open the scoring.
Soon after,
Jena Muller collected a ball on the right side and also let fly from 20 yards out, scoring on a dipping shot to double the Lions' advantage.
Lycoming earned a penalty kick late in the first half and Albright freshman
Kelly Burian dove to her right to save
Spencer Larson. Seconds later an indirect kick was awarded to the Warriors, and Larson headed a powerful shot off the crossbar.
Cassidy made it 3-1 after a great ball over the top from freshman
Rebecca Sartorio. Lyco goalkeeper
Sam Stropko came flying to make the save, but Cassidy got to the rebound first and knocked it in.
Cassidy's second of the day also came on a rebound, after Hand played in
Alee Gormley and her shot was saved near the goalline.
Stephanie Przybyszewski, and then
Emily Diaz, won headers clean off consecutive Muller corners five minutes into the contest, but both went wide.
The Warriors' goal came in the 22nd minute, as
Briana Riddick's cross floated into the back corner to put the visitors on the board. Riddick threatened in the final minute of the first half, but Lion defender
Kirstie Potteiger did well to poke it away.
Lycoming had a dangerous free kick at the beginning of the second half and played it short, but
Kristi Costantino shot wide of the near post.
The Lions improve to 6-3, 1-1 and will travel to Hood College on Saturday.
