The Albright College women's soccer team has qualified for a third Commonwealth Conference playoffs in four years and, after some weather delays, will travel to Lebanon Valley this afternoon at 3 p.m.
The game was originally supposed to take place on Monday, but was pushed back due to Hurricane Sandy closing both institutions earlier in the week.
With the Commonwealth Conference expanding to 10 teams, this will be a new playoff game between the fourth and fifth seeded teams. The winner will travel to defending national champion Messiah on Friday night for a semifinal, with the championship coming on either Saturday or Sunday.
Six Albright seniors are part of the first Albright soccer class to play in three conference playoff tournaments- defenders
Kirstie Potteiger and
Lauren Kelsey, midfielders
Alex Talbot,
Kim Harkins and
Alee Gormley, and forward
Jordan Cassidy.
Cassidy leads the squad with seven assists, and has also scored 20 career goals. Strike partner
Erin Hand, a sophomore, is the Lions' leading scorer in 2012 with seven goals and four assists on the season.
Talbot (three goals) and Gormley (three assists) anchor a midfield that also features junior
Stephanie Przybyszewski (five goals, one assist).
The Lions have two former All-Commonwealth players on defense including Potteiger, a four-year starter, and junior
Mel Sullivan. Sullivan has scored two game-winning spot kicks- an overtime free kick at Delaware Valley and a penalty kick vs. Alvernia.
Albright (10-7, 5-4) needs a better performance against LVC (10-6-1, 6-2-1) after the Dutchmen controlled their regular season meeting. Lebanon Valley out-shot the Lions by a wide margin and won 2-0 thanks to a pair of second half goals.
Lions freshman goalkeeper
Kelly Burian made a career-high 19 saves in the loss, and was only beaten by
Stevi Laird and
Lindi Crist, after halftime.
Crist has three goals on the season while Laird has two. Most of the Dutchmen's scoring punch comes from senior
Nicole Snyder (12 goals, five assists), the defending Commonwealth Conference Player of the Year and three-time All-Conference selection.
In goal, the Dutchmen have split senior
Sami Young (5-5-1, 1.03 GAA, 4 SO's) and junior
Becca Sykes (4-1-0, 0.60 GAA, 4 SO's), with Young starting six of nine conference games.
Lebanon Valley has won three of its last four games by a combined score of 15-0, along with a 1-1 tie with Elizabethtown.
Last season, Przybyszewski scored in the 82nd minute to grab a crucial point for Albright as the Lions tied Lebanon Valley 1-1 at Shirk Stadium.
