The Albright College women's volleyball team dominated the first set but then fell off as Immaculata rallied for a 3-1 victory, Thursday night in the Bollman Center.
Albright held the Mighty Macs to just eight points in the first game, but the match took a stunning turn as Immaculata out-scored the Lions 75-56 the rest of the way, winning 3-1 (8-25, 25-19, 25-16, 25-21).
Junior hitter
Christa Mantz had nine kills and 18 digs, while senior
Alyssa Hoogendoorn added six kills and six blocks.
Senior
Casey McFadden crept closer to the 1000 dig mark, totaling 30 (giving her 976 for her career). Junior
Morgan Heath had a good all-around game, with seven kills, three aces, 12 digs and nine receptions.
The hosts took a 4-3 lead in game one after a nice touch kill from
Brandy Blimline, and then had an ace from Heath. Albright went on a 9-0 run with
Alexa Jones serving, as the Mighty Macs opened with six attack errors and no kills.
A Heath spike made it 20-6, before Immaculata finally recorded its first kill of the match. Mantz soon answered with a kill to make it 22-7 Albright.
The Mighty Macs' performance changed immediately however, and consecutive block assists from the pairing of
Jamie Rombach and
Allison Lang made it 4-1 Immaculata early in the second set.
Haley Swearer's kill made it 10-3, and the Mighty Macs soon led 15-5 after an ace from Lang. Albright went on a small run with Jones serving; the senior then took serve again down 24-17 and led the Lions to two straight points before the rally attempt fizzled.
Two
Andrea Okoro kills in a row put Immaculata up 8-4 in game three, and the Mighty Macs took a double-digit lead after an Albright ball-handling error. A push kill and then an ace from Mantz highlighted a 6-0 Lion run, but the visitors held on to win.
Immaculata took yet another double-digit lead in the deciding game, as consecutive blocks (from Okoro and Rombach) and a nice kill from Rombach made it 15-5.
The Lions are 4-9 overall and will compete Saturday in the MAC Crossover Tournament. Albright will face Freedom Conference opponents Manhattanville and Misericordia, at Elizabethtown.
