The Albright College women's soccer team has earned a berth to the ECAC South championships for the second consecutive season, and will travel to Wilkes University on Wednesday night for a quarterfinal matchup.
The Lions (10-8) earned the sixth seed, just like in 2011, when they upset Swarthmore on the road to reach the semifinals. Wilkes (11-4-4) is seeded third.
Two other Commonwealth Conference teams made the eight-team field, including top-seeded Stevenson, who will host St. Vincent. Lebanon Valley, who knocked Albright out of the league playoffs, will face Moravian.
Albright earned two second team All-Commonwealth selections, including senior forward
Jordan Cassidy (five goals, seven assists). Junior defender
Mel Sullivan was named to the All-Commonwealth team for the second consecutive year, and has scored two game-winning spot kicks this season- an overtime free kick at Delaware Valley and a penalty kick vs. Alvernia.
Freshman goalkeeper
Kelly Burian was excellent in a pair of 2-0 losses to Lebanon Valley this season- making 30 total saves, including 11 in last week's playoff game.
Erin Hand leads the Lions in scoring with seven goals and four assists on the year. Junior
Stephanie Przybyszewski has scored five goals and had Albright's best chance of the game vs. the Dutchmen.
Seniors Cassidy,
Kirstie Potteiger,
Lauren Kelsey,
Alex Talbot,
Kim Harkins and
Alee Gormley will be playing in their sixth career playoff game, and looking for a second postseason victory.
Wilkes finished in third place in a strong Freedom Conference, behind only #13 Misericordia and Eastern (who has advanced past the first round of the NCAA Tournament three times since 2008). The Colonels' season included a pair of 0-0 draws with Eastern, the second of which resulted in a shootout victory for the Eagles in a Freedom semifinal showdown.
The Colonels have the ability to keep teams off the scoreboard, allowing just 12 goals in 19 games (0.60 GAA). Freshman goalkeeper
Kate Mahoney has a 0.64 GAA and eight shutouts in 16 starts.
Mahoney was one of seven Wilkes players to earn All-Conference honors this fall, while head coach
John Sumoski was the Freedom Coach of the Year.
Leading scorer
Katy Fissel was first-team All-Conference in her senior season, along with sophomore
Alicia Roberts (19 points each). Two defenders- senior
Lyndsay Ellis (a four-time first team selection) and freshman
Megan Binder- were also named to the Freedom Conference best-11.
The quarterfinal matchup will kickoff at 7 p.m. in Wilkes' Schmidt Stadium, with the winner advancing to this weekend's final four (at the location of the highest-remaining seed).
