Lions Storm Back in Home Opener

Box Score

The Albright College baseball team trailed by as much as five but scored six unanswered runs late to grab an 8-6 victory in the Lions' 2012 hope opener, Tuesday vs. Penn State-Berks.

The Red and White got outstanding production from their outfield in the win. Centerfielder Max Dundore had the game-winning hit and was 1-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs and two runs scored. Rightfielder Jon Raymond was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, and leftfielder Jared Ruppert was 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

In the bottom of the eighth, Vinny Morgan walked and Raymond was hit by a pitch, opening the door from Dundore's two-RBI blast to the gap that broke open a 6-6 tie.

Albright had scored three times in the seventh to pull even- a rally that started with another Dundore RBI to bring home John Medvecky. Zach Keibler then doubled in Raymond and Dundore came around to tie on Ruppert's single.

Jared Neiheiser (1-0) was the winning pitcher, striking out five over three shutout innings and closing the door in the ninth to clinch the victory. Kevin O'Neill made his first start of the season and last 3.2 innings, getting a no decision.

The Lions trailed 5-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth, but got on the board thanks to Tom Canuso walking home and Alex Myers singling in Dundore. The teams then traded runs in the sixth, putting Berks ahead 6-3 and setting up Albright's late drama.

Kyle Hartman singled in Aaron Wilkins in the first inning for PSU-Berks, before the Nittany Lions made it 3-0 in the third. Connor Corson's two-RBI single tacked on another pair for the visitors an inning later.

Steve Koenig was 2-for-4 with a run, while Wilkins was 3-for-5 and scored three times for Berks.

Albright improves to 2-3 and will face Scranton in a doubleheader in Flemington, N.J. on Saturday. PSU-Berks (0-1) was playing its season opener.
