Men's Lacrosse Set to Play Inaugural Home Game on Saturday

The Albright College men's lacrosse team will play its first-ever varsity home game on Saturday, with the Lions looking to go 2-0 on the season against Penn State-Abington.

The game will be held in Shirk Stadium at 1:00. Following that, the Albright women will play their inaugural home contest at 3:30.

Head coach Jake Plunket, a former assistant at Hampden-Sydney and SUNY-Cortland, will have his squad ready to go, as evidenced by an impressive opening performance on the road this week.

The Lions had a perfect start to their first season, coming from behind to defeat Hood (who will be joining the Commonwealth Conference next year) in a 12-11 thriller on Tuesday.

With the game tied in the final five minutes, the Lions struck twice in a span of 62 seconds. Bryan Smith's unassisted goal made it 11-10 Albright, and T.J. Holston assisted Phil Potter with 3:38 remaining for what would ultimately be the winning goal.

Potter finished with four goals and four assists in his first collegiate contest, and also picked up seven ground balls. Darian Meador contributed with eight ground balls and a 15-for-24 performance on faceoffs. Scoring twice each were Andrew Poitras (one assist as well), Smith and Ryan Turner. Holston had a pair of assists.

Albright had trailed 7-2 and was later down 9-5 midway through the third quarter before the Lions ran off five straight goals to take a lead. Poitras, Connor Grant and Turner pulled the Lions within a goal, and Potter tied things up at 9-9 with his third goal of the afternoon. Jeremy Salmon's unassisted tally then gave Albright its first lead ever, 0:41 from the end of the third period.

Albright trustee Jack Roessner's gift made the creation of the lacrosse programs possible, and he was thrilled to hear that both the men's and women's teams had gotten off to winning starts (the Lady Lions defeated Lancaster Bible 17-6 in their season opener).

Abington is 0-1 on the year after a loss to Mt. St. Mary last Saturday. LiveStats will be available online to those unable to make it to Shirk Stadium, and video highlights will be posted on albrightathletics.com early next week.
