The Lions stormed back from their day off with two victories over Dordt thanks to loads of hits and just a few mistakes. Albright took the first game 11-4 while stealing the second 5-4 in late inning drama, improving to 5-9.
Outhitting Dordt College 16-6 in the first game, senior
Matt Rehrig piloted the Lions through four innings of four-hit ball. Two-thirds of Albright's starters earned multi-hit games. Senior
Tom Canuso had three hits and three RBI in his first game back from suffering an ankle injury against Penn State-Berks on February 28. Sophomore
Nate Peiffer continued his tirade going three for four scoring three runs and driving in two.
The Lion bullpen stymied hitters as freshmen
Codi Pannebecker and
Jared Neiheiser, and junior
Seth Heffner combined to allow just three hits through five and one-third innings on the day.
Albright was down by one entering the fourth inning, but seven hits and six runs later the Lions took control. Junior outfielder
Jared Ruppert recorded two hits in the inning, scored and drove in a run as they batted around. After that the Lions didn't allow another hit until the final inning and both men were left on to give them their first win of the spring trip.
In game two of the doubleheader Albright was led by freshman pitcher
Sean Reilley in his second start as a college pitcher. Reilley lasted four and two-thirds innings before surrendering the third hit of the day to sophomore outfielder
Nathan Fraley.
All tied up entering the fifth inning, first basemen
Travis Deckers led the Blades reaching on an error and driving in one of three runs. The other two came when he placed a Reilley fastball over the right field fence with one out in the third inning. The young pitcher responded quickly coercing back to back pop-outs.
In Albright's half of the sixth inning the Lions tied it up as an error and pass ball sent pinch-runner
Mark Minnig from first to third in just one play. Freshman
Dylan Boll then pinch-hit and stayed hot singling in the tying run before the Blades could get out of the inning.
Seventh inning excitement began as Pannebecker exited after giving up a single to freshman
Aaron Parks, but fellow freshman and closer Neiheiser entered and pushed the Lions through the seventh.
As Albright got its opportunity to take game two a hit batsmen, a
Max Dundore single, and an intentional walk came to a head and the Lions snuck in a run as freshman
Zac Okonski scored on a passed ball.
The day marks the first doubleheader sweep by the Lions since April 17, 2010 against Messiah College.
Albright returns to action on Wednesday in a single-game match-up against Wisconsin-LaCrosse at 10 a.m. to conclude the spring trip before returning home for conference play this weekend against Widener University.
