Baseball Swept in Commonwealth Opening Doubleheader

Game One Box
Game Two Box

Albright baseball suffered two disappointing losses at the hands of the Widener Pride today. Untimely missteps again led to the Lion defeats- three errors in the bottom of the seventh and four total in the first game.

The scoring began in game one with senior and captain of the Pride Dan Sieracki, who skied a pitch over the fence in left center for a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning.

Albright answered with a run in the following half inning, and another again in the fifth off a Jon Raymond single, but Widener regained the lead 3-2 in the same frame.

Senior pitcher Tyler Storms threw a gem- one of the best since rebounding from elbow injury in previous years, striking out six and scattering seven hits and three runs across five innings. The Lion offense didn't allow Storms to leave with a loss however, as in the top of the sixth freshman Matt Dundore led off with a double to left and later scored.

The first two Pride players in the bottom of the sixth walked leading to a Brandon O'Brien RBI-single giving the Pride a one-run lead.

With one out and a runner on first in the Lions' final at bat Raymond doubled to left center moving two runners into scoring position for fell senior Tom Canuso who singled to center, driving in two runs.

An error and a single left Widener with runners on first and second with two outs in the home half of the seventh. Junior Dennis Hocker reached on the second fielding error of the inning, scoring pinch runner Andrew Farris. Albright's freshman pitcher Jared Neiheiser had all but sealed the deal by picking Hocker off but a bobbled throw during the run-down allowed Widener just enough time to score from third and win game one of the doubleheader by a final score of 6-5.

Game two proved to be equally gut-wrenching for the Lions, who held the lead four and a half innings until Widener put together a six-run inning.

Nate Peiffer got the scoring started with a two-run single in the second. Two more runs in the third followed by pair of RBI hits by Dundore and Raymond driving in two runs in the fourth jolted the Lions out to a 6-1 lead.

The Widener fourth and fifth innings each started off with doubles- by Hocker and senior Sean Saverio respectively- but only one run scored in the former when sophomore Michael Riverso singled to left.

The Widener fifth continued with a Sieracki home run ending junior starter Kevin O'Neill's day after four innings of work. Senior reliever Brooks Mitzckewich came on to earn two quick outs, but following an error, a walk, and a hit batsmen the Pride pushed forward. Six singles in a row brought in a total of six runs, reversing the Lions' lead.

The Pride squeeze bunted an insurance run in the sixth and Albright would never recover; the final score was 9-6.

Raymond led the Lions with three hits and- along with Peiffer and Canuso- three RBIs.
