With the Albright College baseball team is desperate need of a win to avoid an 0-3 Commonwealth Conference start, senior ace
Matt Rehrig put the team on his back Sunday with a workhouse effort, in a 3-1 victory over Widener.
Rehrig went 8.2 innings and didn't allow a run until the top of the ninth, finishing with eight strikeouts on the afternoon. Widener's
Jason Ferrie was also outstanding, allowing just four hits and one earned run in an eight-inning losing effort.
At the plate,
Max Dundore was 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while
Jared Ruppert was 1-for-3 and scored. Senior
Tom Canuso (1-for-2) recorded an RBI.
Canuso opened the scoring in a lightning-fast game (nine innings in under two hours) with an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth.
Jon Raymond came around to score after reaching on an error.
Ruppert singled in the bottom of the eighth and then scored on Dundore's single.
Collin Hecker's batted ball snuck through the third baseman and brought Dundore around for a 3-0 Albright lead.
Matt Hone singled in
Dennis Hocker with two out in the ninth inning, but
Doug Mace came in and got
Brendan O'Brien to fly out to left, closing out the Lions' win.
Hocker was 2-3 with a run for Widener, while
Mike Riverson went 2-for-4.
Albright improves to 6-12, 1-2 and will host Muhlenberg on Thursday. Widener is 9-5, 2-1.
