O'Neill Gem Highlights Sweep of Messiah

Game One Box
Game Two Box

Junior Kevin O'Neill threw a complete-game shutout without allowing an extra-base hit as the Albright College baseball team swept defending Commonwealth champion Messiah, 11-6 and 5-0 on Saturday.

In the nightcap, O'Neill allowed just five singles over seven innings of work, walking one and striking out a pair.

Collin Hecker was 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Dylan Boll (2-4) and Jon Raymond (1-4) each knocked in a pair of runs.

The Lions did their damage in the fourth and fifth innings. Boll's double in the top of the fourth scoring Hecker and Tom Canuso; an inning later, Max Dundore doubled in Alex Myers with Raymond bringing Dundore and Patrick Makowski around as well.

Derek Drake's single with two outs in the bottom of the fifth was just the second hit allowed by O'Neill on the day. Drake was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate for Messiah, while Zach Brubaker was 2-for-3.

In the opener, Hecker was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Dundore went 3-for-4 and crossed the plate four times, while Canuso (3-5, 3 RBIs, run) and Myers (2-3, RBI) had big days as well. Senior Tyler Storms (5 IP, 4 runs, 3 K's) took the win decision on the mound.

Albright jumped all over Messiah, as Hecker's double scored Raymond and Dundore in the top of the first, and Canuso's two-RBI double highlighted a three-run second for the Lions.

Albright got four runs in the fourth stanza to blow things open. Canuso singled in Dundore, Raymond scored on an error, John Medvecky brought in Canuso and Myers batted Hecker around.

Brubaker was 2-for-4 and scored three times for Messiah, with Jacob Sprengle (3-4, run, RBI), David Sletta (2-3, 3 RBIs) and Ryan Brown (1-2, run, 2 RBIs) contributing as well.

Albright is 9-14, but more importantly is the Lions' 3-3 record in conference play. The Red and White host Susquehanna on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
