The Albright College women's lacrosse team was tied in the final minutes and even hit the crossbar but fell just short in their bid for a first-ever Commonwealth Conference victory, as Lycoming grabbed a 17-16 win with 13.9 seconds remaining.
With the game tied at 16-16 and under four minutes to play, Harkins got free to the left of the goalmouth but ripped her shot off the crossbar. She then had a good chance on a free position attempt but was stopped by
Kristina Maurer (10 saves).
The Warriors got out of their end and with 58 seconds remaining, Albright's
Kiersten Keehn (nine saves) made a huge stop on
Erin Cieniewicz's free position chance.
Brooke Strausser then had a free position from dead-center but put the shot wide.
Sarah Quigley (who had also been stopped by Keehn late in the game) finally broke free for the Warriors from behind goal and found the space to shoot, scoring a heartbreaking winner with less than 14 seconds left in regulation.
Harkins finished with six goals and an assist, while
Meghan Wilson totaled five goals, two assists and nine draw controls.
Nicole Rohrbach added two goals and a trio of assists, while
Tia Claxton scored twice and forced three turnovers.
Albright had trailed 13-7 but ran off nine of 10 goals to take a 16-14 advantage. Wilson scored on the man-advantage to make it 14-13, and then fed Harkins all alone on a free position attempt to tie the game.
The Lions then had five minutes of sustained possession, being stopped several times before Rohrbach struck to take the lead. Harkins added a goal with 8:38 to play, making it 16-14.
A yellow card to Albright with under five minutes to play allowed the Warriors a power play opportunity however, and they converted with 3:57 remaining to tie the game at 16-all and set up a frantic finish.
The teams were dead-even in shots on goal (26-26), with Albright holding a slight 37-36 lead in total shots. The Lions also won 21 of 35 draws.
Casey Maguire had six goals, while Strausser finished with five.
Maureen Heagy (assist) and
Amber Graybill also struck twice each.
Albright was playing its final home contest of the season, and falls to 4-11, 0-4. The Lions organized an Autism Awareness campaign, and collected money for autism research and support during the game.
