Box Score
The Albright College baseball team had the chance to conclude its 2012 season in the Reading Phillies' FirstEnergy Stadium, losing 9-5 to local Division II opponent Kutztown University.
Mark Minnig was 1-for-2 with two RBIs, while sophomores
Nate Peiffer (1-3) and
Collin Hecker (1-3) each tripled. Freshman
Codi Pannebecker threw two shutout innings of relief.
On the second at-bat of the game, Peiffer knocked a shot to the gap and legged out a triple, just getting his foot to the bag ahead of the throw. He then scored on Hecker's sacrifice fly to shallow center.
Albright starting pitcher
Alex Myers got a Golden Bear to whiff up high for the second out of a 1-2-3 first inning. He then got the first out of the second, but a throwing error kicked off a three-run stanza, highlighted by
Brad Stoudt's RBI-triple.
Hecker made a tough diving catch on an infield blooper as part of a 1-2-3 third for Myers and the Lions. Kutztown finally did chase Myers with three runs in the fourth, although two were unearned.
Down 8-1, the Lions put two on base the top of the sixth but first baseman
Brandon Hickey chased down a foul pop to end the inning. Freshman
Ben Vitelli got a pinch-hit single in the seventh but again Albright came home empty-handed.
Hecker came through with a stand-up triple in the top of the eighth, and scored on senior
Jon Raymond's RBI.
Senior pitcher
Paul Labe, III walked in the ninth and came around to score his only collegiate run in his final career inning, on
Zac Okonski's RBI.
Max Dundore nearly homered in the professional park, ripping a line drive off the top of the left-field wall. Minnig hit a bloop single that brought in both Dundore and Okonski.
The final scoreline ended at 9-5, as the Lions ended their season with a 13-27 record. Kutztown is 32-15 heading into their PSAC playoff opener on Wednesday.
