Top-Seeded Lions Set to Host LVC in Playoff Opener

The Albright College men's lacrosse team did the unthinkable in their first-ever regular season, going 15-2 with a squad comprised entirely of underclassmen and grabbing the top seed in this week's MAC playoffs. Now the Lions will look to get it done in the playoffs, opening with a home game vs. Lebanon Valley tonight.

There is only one NCAA bid for the Middle Atlantic Conference this spring as the league continues its split into two divisions. A Commonwealth and Freedom champion will be decided on Tuesday and Thursday, with the MAC championship game set for Saturday.

Albright (15-2, 5-1) will host LVC (9-5, 3-3) at 7 p.m. in Shirk Stadium. As the top Commonwealth seed, the Lions would earn the right to host Widener/Lycoming on Thursday (and then the MAC title game on Saturday) if they can win out.

The two teams played a thriller here earlier in the season, as freshman Philip Potter scored with 31.8 seconds remaining to give the Lions a hard-fought 12-11 win.

Potter has been among the national assist leaders all season, and currently leads the Commonwealth with 44 helpers, well above LVC's Malik Pedroso (who ranks second with 26 assists).

Albright freshman Dan Foote leads the league with 44 goals, while the Lions have put a remarkable four rookies in the top-five in total scoring: Potter (first, 68 pts), Foote and T.J. Holston (tied for third, 52 pts.) and Bryan Smith (fifth, 51 pts.).

Yet another freshman, goalie Andrew Torak, has won Commonwealth Defensive Player of the Week honors four times this season. Sophomores Mike Donohoe and Sean Cunningham line up ahead of him on defense, and freshman Darian Meador takes the faceoff duties.

LVC is led by Pedroso (59 points) on offense. Scott Sutton is one of the league's best at draws (63%, 125 ground balls), and his battle with Meador will be a major key to the game. The Dutchmen's three conference losses have been by an average of under three goals, so winning possession will be important in what could be a very tight game.
