Women's Tennis Set for First Commonwealth Playoff Match

The Albright College women's tennis team has undergone an instant revival this spring, qualifying for the Commonwealth Conference playoffs for the first time. Now the Lions travel to Lebanon Valley this afternoon for a semifinal matchup at 3:30 p.m.

After a winless 2010-11 season, Albright is on an 8-3 run since March 28 under new head coach Jeremy Speicher. The Lions won all three of their Commonwealth victories by 5-4 decisions, and will rely heavily on their top three players if they are to upset LVC (14-4, 5-1).

Defending Commonwealth Conference MVP Victoria Foanio is 17-1 at first singles this season, and will take on Christie Graf, who she defeated 6-2, 6-0 a week ago.

Foanio will team with freshman Christina Peacock at first doubles, and will take on Graf and Amelia Capuano (10-5 in the top spot).

If Foanio can take both her matches, Albright will look to two newcomers to compete for the three further points they will need to win. Freshman Alyssa Sell will take on Capuano at second singles, after a tough 6-4, 6-4 loss to her in the regular season.

Senior Katy Oeste joined the squad this spring and has a 10-2 record in singles play. She will take on Lauren Fulmer at third singles; Fulmer defeated Oeste 7-6, 6-3 last time out. Oeste and Sell will also team at second doubles.

Freshmen Melissa Carberry and Ligeia Evans will play in the fifth and sixth singles spots, respectively, and will also team up at third doubles. Peacock is slated to play at fourth singles.

Today's winner will take on the victor of Elizabethtown vs. Alvernia in Saturday's Commonwealth Conference championship.
