Box Score
The Albright College men's soccer team scored three times in a seven-minute, second half span to open the 2012 season with a come-from-behind 4-3 victory over host Penn State-Berks on Friday.
The Lions found themselves down in the 60th minute after some sloppy defending resulted in an
Avis McGill goal against the run of play, and a shock 2-1 Berks lead.
Junior
Tyler Waters could have scored twice in the ensuing two minutes, but was unlucky on both occasions. First his volley from 10 yards out forced an outstanding save from Berks goalkeeper
John Murphy (12 saves), and then his goal off
Brad Wood's long throw was called back for an off-the-ball foul.
The Lions kept coming though, and sophomore
Chris Bucks tied it in the 66th minute, taking
Austin Phillips' pass and calmly sliding it into the left corner. Just 46 seconds later,
Shawn Murphy hit a dipping ball from 25-yards out that left Murphy no chance and put Albright in the lead.
Waters then helped the Lions to the lead, as his volley in the 72nd minute off another Wood throw found the net.
The Nittany Lions didn't give up however, and
Michael Vong put one in off the far post with 15 minutes remaining to set up a nervy finish. Waters nearly provided an insurance goal on two occasions- first Murphy came flying out of his box to slap away a breakaway, then somehow tipped another clear Waters chance up and onto the crossbar.
Murphy was forced off his line to smother Phillips and Waters opportunities early in the game, but it was Berks that drew first blood in the 19th minute.
The Lions would come from behind for the first of two times when
Fran Schmutz found Waters over the top and the junior volleyed in home for a 1-1 scoreline.
The hosts had some good chances late in the first half, as a poor Albright clearance allowed
Justin Bass to rip a 30-yard shot off the post.
Kiernan Boone then rolled a shot just wide of the post after a ball dropped to him in the penalty area.
Freshman
Austin Aldinger made his first collegiate start and stopped two shots in the victory. Albright is 1-0 and will host Immaculata on Wednesday.
