The Albright College men's soccer team earned their first conference win of the season tonight with a 3-1 victory over Widener University at Shirk Stadium.
Five minutes in,
Vitali Zaluha made defenders miss with a crafty move and blasted a far-side goal past Widener goalkeeper
Jakub Valdner, giving Albright the early lead.
Just minutes later, Zaluha nearly netted his second goal of the night but Valdner made a great diving save to preserve a one goal deficit for the Pride.
Widener answered back midway through the first half as
Zac Furia was able to capitalize on a nice assist from
Eric Taylor, evening the score at one.
Early in the second half, Albright goalkeeper
Austin Aldinger made a tremendous save on a close-up Widener shot to keep the game tied.
The deadlock was shortly ended when senior captain
Tyler Waters outran the Widener defense and buried his fifth goal of the season, putting the Lions ahead 2-1.
Moments later, Zaluha continued his impressive offensive performance as he scored his second goal of the night, expanding the Albright lead to 3-1.
Playing inspired soccer throughout the match, the Lions were able to salvage their two goal lead with the help of Aldinger's stellar goalkeeping and Zaluha's aggressive offensive charge.
With tonight's victory, the Albright Lions improve to 5-9-2, 1-4-1, while the Widener Pride fall to 5-7-4, 0-3-3.
Albright's next chance to continue their conference momentum will come Saturday as the team travels to Stevenson University for a 1 p.m. matchup.
