Box Score
The Albright men's soccer team concluded their 2013 season with a 4-0 loss to the Messiah Falcons tonight at Shirk Stadium.
Minutes into the match, Messiah nearly took the early lead but Albright goalkeeper
Austin Aldinger aggressively denied a shot inside the eighteen.
Matching Messiah's offensive pace, the Lions almost put themselves on the board when freshman
Andrew Sussingham sent a shot just wide of the net.
With fifteen minutes remaining in the first half,
Sheldon Myer put the Falcons on top 1-0 on a 25 yard bullet above an outstretched Aldinger.
Messiah's offensive dominance continued as they tallied two late first half goals just minutes apart off of corner kicks. The second goal of the game came on a deflection inside the Albright six by
Jacob Bender. The Falcons' third goal of the night came on a
Carter Robbins headball off of a corner kick as he used his height to his advantage.
The Falcons' first half momentum continued into the second half when
Joshua Wood buried a goal off of a
Jack Thompson crossing pass, giving Messiah a commanding 4-0 lead. The four-goal Albright deficit proved to be insurmountable against the #1 nationally ranked team in Messiah.
With tonight's season ending defeat, the Albright Lions team finished 7-10-2, 3-5-1 on the year, while the Messiah Falcons improved to 18-1, 9-0.
Tonight's match was the final collegiate game for seniors
Tyler Waters,
Shawn Murphy, and
Chris Bette, as the team honored their veterans prior to the game. The seniors played a large part in the Lions' late season Commonwealth playoff push that fell just short.
Albright will look to carry their late season momentum into the 2014 season as they return a large majority of their roster and look to have a promising future.
