Box Score
The Albright College men's lacrosse team battled through snow and hail to defeat Gwynedd-Mercy on Saturday in Shirk Stadium, by a final score of 15-6.
Juniors
Philip Potter and
Ryan Turner each had a hat trick and added three assists as well. Classmate
Dan Foote also recorded a hat trick on the day.
The Lions picked up 44 ground balls, including eight by Turner and six by midfielder TJ Holston.
Joe Devinney picked up five ground balls and caused two turnovers.
Sophomore
Darian Meador continued his outstanding faceoff play, winning 16-of-21 (76.2%) draws and picking up eight ground balls. He held GMC's
Jonathan Figliola (60.0% on the season entering today) to just five wins in 20 attempts.
Gwynedd-Mercy senior goalie
Rylee O'Keefe was everywhere for the Griffins, stopping 19 shots. He should have had 20 saves, but Holston's first quarter shot was scrambled into the goal by a GMC defender after it was initially blocked by O'Keefe.
Albright peppered O'Keefe's goal with 21 first quarter shots, but led just 3-2 after the opening period. After three wide shots, Turner took it in from behind the cage to get Albright on the board at 9:26.
Following Holston's goal, the Griffins got a 6-on-4 and
William Beck tallied to tie the game at 2-2. Holston then hit the crossbar, but Foote scored on a pass from Potter to give Albright the lead.
The Lions opened the game up late in the second quarter. Potter and Foote each scored on a quick counter following a failed GMC clear, just 39 seconds apart. The Lions earned a man-advantage following the latter point, and Turner scored to push the lead to 6-2.
Jordan DiZenzo made seven saves for Albright, including an early third quarter stop on
Roy Bakeoven's man-advantage shot.
Matthew Lomady scored soon after for a 7-3 Lion lead.
Mike Southwick and Potter tacked on goals midway through the third, giving Albright a 9-3 advantage. GMC scored two unanswered, but Potter made a great cut past his man to make it 10-5.
Albright improves to 4-1 on the season, and will travel to Richard Stockton on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
