Baseball Splits Season-Opening Doubleheader

Game One Box
Game Two Box

The Albright College baseball team began their season with a doubleheader against the Royals from Scranton University. The two teams split, with Scranton winning the first game 11-4 and Albright winning a close one by a score of 5-4.

The Lions jumped out early in the first game. Junior Nathan Peiffer led off the game with a walk, followed by a Collin Hecker single. Back to back two-out walks by Gabe Santone and Evan High saw the Lions take a 1-0 lead.

Scranton didn't wait long to reclaim the lead, scoring three runs on two hits. The Lions didn't help themselves, allowing a walk and making three errors.

The Lions got a run back in the third after Dundore scored from third on a wild pitch. Starting pitcher Kevin O'Neill allowed a home run in the bottom half of the frame as the Royals began to pull away. After allowing the home run, a double, single, and a walk in the inning O'Neill was able to limit the damage, working out of a bases loaded jam to keep the Lions within two.

Seth Heffner followed O'Neill to the mound, giving up three runs on six hits and a walk in 1.2 innings of relief. Aaron Forker and Zach Graham each allowed two runs in a sloppy 6th inning.

The Lions mounted a small rally in the 7th, scoring two runs on RBI singles from Peiffer and John Medvecky. The rally ended as Hecker popped out to end the game.

The Lions hurt themselves as they shook of the rust in their first game, making 5 errors, allowing 5 free passes, and stranding 13 runners on base.

Albright responded well to the rough loss, defeating Scranton in comeback fashion for their first victory of the young season.

Game 2 appeared to be a pitcher's duel, as the two teams remained tied at nothing a piece through three. Scranton pulled ahead in the 4th, putting two up on the board. Pitcher Jared Neihieser worked out of jam and finished the day striking out 5 and allowing 3 runs in 4.1 innings of work.

Albright scored runs in the 4th and 5th on a single from Boll and on an error from the Royals shortstop making it a 4-2 game.

The Lions took the lead in the bottom of the 6th scoring three runs to take a 5-4 lead. Boll singled to start the inning. Mark Minnig pinch-ran for the catcher, advancing to second on a wild pitch. Santone walked and each runner advanced a bag on a double steal. Sophmore Zach Kiebler singled to drive them in, tying the game. He scored on a Medvecky double.

Alex Myers pitched a clean 7th, earning the win.

The Lions are now 1-1 on the season, and will play again Wednesday March 6th at Lancaster Bible.
