Lions Hold Off Wilkes in Shirk Stadium

Box Score

The Albright College women's lacrosse team got a scare from Wilkes on Wednesday, but freshman Amanda Smith was ultimately too much for the Colonels in a 15-13 Lions win.

A. Smith scored five of Albright's final eight goals to help fight back a pair of comeback attempts. Fellow rookie Erin Farrell also had a great performance, with four goals and three assists.

A. Smith scored a pair of free position shots early in the second half to push the Lions' lead to 13-6. Wilkes' Carley Smith tallied two free position attempts in just 35 seconds however to start a visitor rally.

Tori Kerr and Madeleine Brownsey added free-positions for Wilkes, and C. Smith completed a 5-0 run with 11:56 remaining- the first goal scored in the run of play since before halftime.

Wilkes had possession again but got called for a charge, leading to a huge Farrell goal and a 14-11 Albright lead. The Colonels' Gabby Ford hit the crossbar late in the game, but then scored with 3:16 remaining to make it 15-13 Albright.

With one minute left Ford attacked again, but Albright goalie Emily Hutson (seven stops) made a crucial low save to end the threat.

Wilkes had started well, as C. Smith hit the post and Ford converted a free-position shot to open the scoring. C. Smith had another FPA chance, but Albright defender Sarah Nale did well to force a turnover.

After Tori Meyer scored for Albright, Kerr answered with another free-position goal for Wilkes, and C. Smith hit the post again.

The Lions soon took over the lead, scoring twice in 11 seconds. After Meyer's goal, Rebecca Roman won the draw and fed Farrell for another quick strike.

Eight minutes in, Nicole Rohrbach pulled back on a free-position and fed Meghan Wilson for a 4-2 Albright lead. Farrell found Rohrbach all alone in front of goal for another tally.

The Lions led 7-3, and Hutson protected that with nice saves on Ford and Kerr, the latter on a free position shot. Wilkes kept attacking however and exploded for three goals in 36 seconds, cutting the gap to 7-6.

A. Smith took over at that point, ending the Wilkes run with a nice cut to the cage, then scoring again 28 seconds later after forcing a turnover. She added a goal as time expired before halftime, converting a free position shot with less than a second remaining on the clock.

Albright improves to 5-1 on the season, and will travel to Gwynedd-Mercy College on Tuesday.
