Game One BoxGame Two BoxThe Albright College baseball team split its doubleheader against Lebanon Valley College on Saturday, winning Game 1 by a score of 4-3.
Despite making six errors in the field and mustering only four hits at the plate, the Lions were able to steal one from the Dutchmen in this weekend's series.
The Dutchmen scored first, plating two in the first off of starter
Jared Neiheiser. The Dutchmen had runners on 1st and 3rd after
Phill Dohner singled following a leadoff walk by senior
Derek Brousseau. He would score after catcher
Dylan Boll's throw went into the outfield when Dohner stole second.
It seemed like Neiheiser had worked his way out of the inning when he was able to get the next two batters to strike out looking. However, a single and an Albright error would yield another run before the pitcher was able to get a flyout to left to end the inning.
The Lions scored three runs in the second to take a one-run lead. Designated hitter
Tyler Meckley reached on a fielder's choice, after which
Gabe Santone walked to put runners on 1st and 2nd with one out. Right fielder
Evan High grounded to the shortstop, who forced Santone out at second, but threw the ball away trying to get complete the double play. The error allowed High to advance to second and Meckley to score.
Alex Myers followed a single from
John Medvecky with a two-run triple to take the lead.
Albright added a run in the 3rd when
Collin Hecker singled to drive in
Nate Peiffer, who had led off the inning with a double.
The Dutchmen got one back in the fourth to make it a one-run game, but Neiheiser was able to limit the damage before leaving after the sixth.
Junior Zack Graham came on in the seventh and picked up the save, striking out
Corey Cinicola looking to end the game.
The Lions were not as fortunate in the second game as seven Albright errors and timely hitting by the Dutchmen saw Lebanon Valley take an early 4-1 lead. They added two in the 5th and one in the 6th and 7th innings to make it an 8-2 game heading into the last frame.
In a valiant effort, the Lions fought to come back in their last at bat, scoring four runs on five hits and bringing the tying run to the plate. It was all for naught however as Dutchman reliever
Lee Webber struck out
Ben Vitelli to seal the victory for Lebanon Valley.
The Lions are now 7-5, 1-2 and will play next at Susquehanna University on Tuesday, March 26, game time 4 p.m.
