The Albright College men's lacrosse team recorded a rare conference shutout, blanking Hood College 18-0 at home in their Commonwealth opener on Thursday.
Junior
Sean Cunningham (four caused turnovers, four ground balls) and sophomore
Joe Devinney (three caused turnovers) led a stifling Albright defense.
Darian Meador won 11-of-19 draws and picked up eight ground balls.
Senior
Jordan DiZenzo (five saves) made the start in the cage while sophomore
Andrew Torak made six stops in relief, including several tough plays to keep things scoreless.
Thomas Mitchell and
Tyler Trendy also contributed to the shutout.
Following an 11-4 win over Neumann, the Lions have now made 21 saves while allowing just four goals in a pair of victories this week.
On the attack sophomore
Ryan Turner had five goals, while classmate
Philip Potter added two goals and four assists.
Sophomore TJ Holston battled through three physical defenders and held onto the ball to open the scoring. Freshman
Matthew Lomady made it 2-0 on a nice riser, and classmate
Johnny Moore soon tacked on a third.
In the first minute of the second quarter, Potter hit Turner with a nice pass and the sophomore flipped it in while just outside the crease. A nice rip from Holston made it 6-0, and Potter found Moore from behind the cage for a 7-0 lead.
Hunter Riggs picked up a ground ball following a Holston caused turnover and fed Potter to make it 9-0;
Mike Southwick then pushed the gap to double-digits.
In the dying seconds of the first half, Turner forced a turnover and scored with just three seconds on the clock, as Albright led 12-0 at halftime.
Torak made a nice low save on
Doug Brisbane early in the third quarter. He then stoned
Randolph Clark, with Turner taking it the other way for a 16-0 Albright lead. Finally, he made a huge fourth quarter low stop on
Zach Speights, from point-blank range.
Albright improves to 7-1, 1-0 and records its second shutout in just two varsity seasons (following a 22-0 blanking of Penn State- Abington last spring).
